We woke with the birds and made it to the Acropolis before the heat, and the crowds would be a problem. The early start was worth it. We were 10th in line, and once on the site, it almost felt like we had the place to ourselves. The Acropilis is magnificent and mind blowing and once again, I felt humbled to walk the paths and feel the vibration of ancient people.

Meterora Part 3 (Finale)
Our last visit of the day was to a monetary that is a nunnery. Here, the gardens are lush and do seem to have a more feminine touch. No steps required to enter this one!
I wish I could share photos of the absolutely stunning murals and woodcarving found inside the churches, but no photography or video is allowed. You'll have to trust me when I say it is stunning, and perhaps do a google search for official photos.

Meterora Part 2
More stairs, more stunning views. Our second monastery was a little easier to access with only 150 steps to climb. This monetary is grander than the first one we visited, with gardens and courtyards that are peaceful and beautiful.
The monasteries and nunneries of Meterora are active, working places of worship and there are strict rules around what is appropriate attire for visitors. No bare backs, shoulders or knees for men and women, and women are required to wear skirts... Pants are not acceptable. If you don't have the appropriate clothing, loaner skirts and scarves are provided.
Normally, a dress is the last thing you would find me wearing if I had to climb a bunch of stairs up a rock in 37 C heat, but part of experiencing this place is respecting these easy to follow rules.

Meterora Part 1
We're on the mainland of Greece now. After a quick flight from Santorini to Athens we picked up a car and drove just over 4 hours to an area called Meterora, which is famous for the monasteries built on top of majestic rock columns jutting into the sky. We were up early this morning to make our way to the monasteries.
This region is stunning for it's geographical features, as well as it's monasteries. This is my third time visiting Meterora and I continue to be blown away by the beauty I find here, both natural and man-made. One does not have to be religious to appreciate the spirituality of Meterora.
Our first monastery of the day required a bit of work to appreciate the views from its grounds. We had to walk up a steep hill to reach the base of the monastery and then climb 270 steps to reach the entrance.

We stopped by the Bruce Trail Conservancy booth so Emma could relive the time she did 21ish km of the Bruce Trail (most of it in the rain) with her school class last fall. It was definitely a challenge and landed squarely in the realm of type-two fun. But she's super proud of doing it. Future goal: Taking Vanna to basecamp at Bruce Peninsula National Park and explore The Bruce.

I was really surprised at how low the flow was. We were here a few years ago, and the spot where I stood to take these shots was covered in water back then. I wonder if there is a damn upriver controlling the flow? My take today is to investigate that.
We were hoping the Salmon would be running this weekend, but so far we haven't seen any trying to make their way up the falls.

And now for something completely different.... We're giving van camping a spin! But this isn't just any van. It's an '89 Dodge Ram that my dad converted into an RV in '90, shipped over to Europe and then drove 220,000+ kms around the world.
Yah. Really.
Dad gifted "Vanna" to us earlier this year and we've been busy getting her a bit updated. We decided early on that Vanna was going to be mostly Emma's ride. But this weekend we left her at home and Alex, Buddy and I have hit the road for our first trip.

This year seems to be all about change for the Sometimes Eventful crew. A lot of those changes have been hard. Like, super hard. And some of them have been pretty crappy. Actually, super crappy. But a few of those changes have actually been really good and signal amazing new adventures ahead of us.

We just sold our lovely pop-up trailer and waved goodbye as the new owner towed it from our driveway this afternoon. After 10 years of base camping from those 4 walls on wheels, I have nothing but good memories about all the adventures we've had with the pop-up. So many adventures, places explored and an enormous amount of laughter has happened with that trailer. It has kept us warm, sheltered us from wicked storms and been a haven in the woods for our little family when all we needed to do was rest and recharge in nature.

You might think this is one of the crappy changes. But it isn't. Not at all!

We are so excited for the new owners - a lovely family with 3 young children - to have their own adventures and make their own memories in the pop-up and discover the amazing things Ontario's outdoors have to offer.

This isn't the end of our camping adventures. Its just a change.... A good change and the start of a whole new phase for the Sometimes Eventful family!

We Get Outside

Getting outside, exploring, and doing stuff as a family is really important to us. In fact, it encompasses almost every aspect of our recreation time. We’ve seen first-hand how becoming outdoors enthusiasts has had an incredibly positive affect on our daughter as she grows up, and on our family in general.

We aren’t really different than a lot of other families. We work full time while our daughter goes to school and balances friends with a love for being at a dance studio every evening. I have aging parents who require my help and advocacy on a regular basis. Alex and I grew up in families that didn’t spend time in the outdoors at all.

This is exactly why I started my blog, Sometimes Eventful. People were always asking me about the stuff we did. And I found myself frequently giving advice and encouraging them to just get out there and try it. After all, if I could do these things so could my friends and family. Sometimes Eventful was born out of wanting to help people get outside and have some fun, while breaking down the idea that you need to be an epic adventurer to enjoy the benefits of an outdoor lifestyle.

Believe me... I am not an epic adventurer. I’m a middle-aged mom with a 9-5 desk job. I have greying hair and bad feet and I’m still trying to lose the baby fat I gained with Emma, 13 years ago. I’m afraid of falling off of high things like cliffs or the edges of crevices, big rocks or rocky, unstable logs in a river. Spiders freak me out.
