Guelph Jazz Festival The Guelph Jazz Festival is an annual event that presents creative, improvised music.

Spearheaded by Ajay Heble, the Guelph Jazz Festival was founded in 1994 by a group of friends who shared a love of creative improvised music and a commitment to Guelph. The Festival has consistently garnered praise from local, national, and international critics for its great programming. Ajay Heble retired as Artistic Director in 2016; Scott Thomson was hired to replace him in early 2017.

Guelph! Let’s show our collective support for our community by donating non-perishable food on Sept 11 & 12 during Guelph Jazz Festival events at the Royal City Mission.

Suggested food donations include:
- Canned fruits or vegetables
- Dried or canned beans
- Canned tuna, chicken or salmon
- Canned soups or stews
- Peanut butter
- Whole-grain rice or pasta
- Granola, oats or cereal
- Protein bars and snack bars

Food donations bins will be located at the front entrance of Royal City Mission both days.

All food donations will be given to the Royal City Mission in support of their drop-in and meal programs.

Kicking off this year’s festival on Friday at 6 PM is pianist Tania Gill with legendary Toronto collaborators Rob Clutton, Nick Fraser, and Brodie West. They will perform a set of compositions that explore Gill’s fascinations with pensive lyricism and playful angularity.

Gill, Clutton, Fraser, and West share a deep history that connects them in a shared language and practice that draws from jazz, avant-garde, indie-rock, folk, blues, and 20th century classical music.

Our Saturday evening program begins with the return of Nicole Mitchell, who will have brought the house down with Tiger Trio the night before.

For Saturday’s performance, Nicole will take part in an ad hoc duo with other-worldly Toronto experimental turntablist, SlowPitchSound.

Sets like this are part of what makes the world of creative music-making such an exciting thing to explore and celebrate: two extraordinary musicians, as deeply committed to the art of collaboration as they are to their craft as instrumentalists and composers, meeting for the first time on stage so that we can witness the magick of that first meeting along with them.
