Confessions of an Artist on Deadline: the first part of a painting and the last part of a painting are where the most changes happen. The middle part just sorta happens. You speed along and don't pay as much attention. It feels like life goes along like that too. As we get older, the last third of our life starts to require more focus. We can't coast on our earlier work from the start. We have to pay attention. Small changes matter. Just like the width of a brush stroke can make all the difference, so can one small change in our daily lives. When we wrap this up, we want to have painted our magnum opus. So, to that I remind myself to slow down and focus. Stop mindlessly coasting. Somewhere in all of that is the way forward Poppets. Let's savor this💙

Still working away on this 16 x 20 inch Salt River wildie. He's in the adding and subtracting phase...where I look at what needs toned down and what needs punched up. Obviously things like that hoof and fetlock have not gone past the initial block in stage. He doesn't have whiskers or eyelashes yet....an it's a process of layers to get him to the finish line. This is a close up and not the full image. Thanks again to Mark Storto for this fabulous reference photo. Happy Sunday Poppets! For artists interested: I like to compare the in progress photo with the reference, side by side in paint program and then I can go in and very roughly edit with the paint program and then go back in and adjust the painting. It helps to see changes better if that makes sense. Happy creating :)

All the little details! I am calling the colors and values "close enough" for the background. The horse on the other hand is not as close to the reference, but I keep reminding myself it is not a commission and it does not have to be exactly like the photo. I am capturing the spirit of the moment! more to come :)

Who is out there giving you a leg up today? It is a huge world full of artists, with seemingly impossible odds. Everyone is waiting to be "discovered"; and also a small world as it only takes one chance meeting to open a new door! While I create, I also allow myself to dream. A new door is opening. Somebody somewhere has spoke my name into the wind. I wonder where it will take my art...

UNDERPAINTING stage...so don't look too closely. 🙈 My ego shudders every time I share the process as so much of it is no where near finished. At this stage, I have gone in again and adjusted my drawing...carved down side of face, built out the leg muscle, etc. I think the grass part is "sorta" close...but those dreaded flowers will take a bit of finagling to make sense. 🤣 My reference was graciously provided by talented photographer, Mark Storto. He has captured a Salt River wild horse in the middle of the desert bloom of these sweet little cup flowers. 16 x 20 inches on gallery wrapped canvas. Acrylics :)
