I know a few of you have been wondering where I was and what I was learning a couple weeks ago; teaser is over! 🤭

Over the last few months, I’ve been undergoing virtual training, and to bring those studies to a close, I spent a week in PEI with Duke Ferguson at Unleashed Potential to complete my Professional Dog Trainer Certification, and what an incredible week it was!!

A huge thank you to Duke for sharing so much of his knowledge, experience and perspective with us. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn from someone who has spent his whole life working with dogs, and developing his understanding of training, behaviour and communication.

During our in-person week, I got to work alongside brand new board and train dogs as they began their journeys, work with day train regulars, and venture out with the dogs into a variety of environments, including semi-private and group classes.

We also stepped outside of the dog world for an afternoon to visit a falconry; exploring how the same principles of learning can be applied across different species and animal training industries. It was such a cool experience, and only solidified my appreciation for just how much there is to learn about animal behaviour.

I’m incredibly grateful for the time I got to spend at Unleashed Potential; for the dogs, the people, the knowledge, the conversations, and all of the experiences I get to bring home with me. Thank you and Duke and the Unleashed Potential crew, for welcoming me in and allowing me to be a small part of what you do. 🤍

Now comes the fun part; putting all of that learning into practice!

There’s a little behind-the-scenes housekeeping happening as I get everything ready, but I’m excited to start sharing what’s coming next.

FUN FACT FRIDAY 🐾

No two dogs have exactly the same nose print! The patterns of ridges, lines and creases on a dog's nose are unique to each individual; much like the patterns on our very own fingerprints.

Just another tiny detail that makes your dog completely and quite literally, one of a kind ❤️

Our dogs are not robots. 🐕 Building up your relationship and positive experiences together while providing your safety and companionship will come back to you with love, trust and a bond to never be broken. The bond grows deeper as we continue to guide them to understand how we navigate in a world of rules that are so unnatural to them.

Freedom without the skills to navigate that privilege can create opportunities to rehearse undesired behaviors.

FUN FACT FRIDAY 🐾

A dog's nose is doing a lot more than simply detecting smells.

Each nostril can take in a slightly different scent profile; their brain can then compare the differences in the information they gather to help determine the direction an odor originates. And what about those little side slits on your dog's nose? They help push exhaled air out and away while allowing them to continue taking in fresh scent information. (How freaking cool!?)

A dog's sense of smell is so much more than simply having a "good nose"; they're constantly gathering and processing information simply from the air around them!

Summer means spending more time outside with our dogs; which unfortunately also means spending more time around all of the little creatures that bite, sting, crawl and generally make themselves unwelcome in our bubbles 😂

Most insect bites/stings are relatively minor and may cause some temporary swelling, redness, or discomfort. However just like people, some dogs can have more significant reactions and it's important to know when something may be more serious.
Knowing the signs/symptoms simply help you recognize quickly when something doesn't seem quite right.

Knowing what to watch for also means less time worrying and more time enjoying our short summers with your best friend!🐝🐾
