Meet Baxter πŸ’›

This is the dog who changed everything for me. Because of Baxter, I fell in love with understanding dogs on a much deeper level.

Over the years together, we've worked through countless learning curves. We made many mistakes, celebrated many victories, and grew side by side together. Through every stage of our journey, Baxter met me with patience and unwavering trust while I learned to become the handler he deserved.

He challenged me to look beyond behaviours and ask the WHY.
He taught me that every behavior has a story, every dog communicates in their own way, and that truly dissecting and understanding the why will always take you further than assumptions ever could.

He opened my eyes to a new level of compassion and understanding for dogs that are often misunderstood or labeled as "reactive," reminding me that all behavior is some form of communication and that every dog deserves to be heard before they're judged.

Baxter became the reason I wanted to learn more.
Every book I read, every course I take, and every new skill I develop is, in part, because of him. He inspired me to grow; not only for him, but for myself. Our journey together is what has inspired me to help others who may be struggling like we were all those years ago and to continue pursuing my passion for canine health, behavior, communication, and education.

He is my constant reminder to stay curious, and the muse behind this next chapter of my journey.

Here's to the dog who started it all. πŸ’›

The 30-Second Nose-to-Tail Check Every Dog Owner Should Know

Not every emergency starts with a dramatic collapse or gushing wound.

Sometimes your dog is trying to tell you something is wrong long before it becomes obvious.

Once a week, take just 30 seconds to do a quick head-to-tail check. ( I actually like to do it daily when I'm petting my pup after a walk, as the cats supervise lol!)

🐾 Eyes – bright and clear?

πŸ‘ƒ Nose – any unusual discharge?

~ Ears – redness, odor or excessive wax?

~ Mouth – pink gums and fresh breath?

~ Coat/Skin – any new lumps, scabs or hot spots?

~ Paws – cuts, cracked pads or foreign objects?

The goal isn't to diagnose - it's to notice what's different.

Because you know your dog better than anyone.

πŸ‘‡ Have you ever found something during a routine cuddle that needed a trip to the vet?

Foxtails and grass seeds may seem harmless, but these tiny hitchhikers can cause big problems for our pets.

After a walk, hike, or day spent exploring, seeds can become trapped between toes, inside ears, around the eyes, or even in the nose. Left unnoticed, they can cause painful irritation, infections, and sometimes require veterinary removal.

Simple task to limit this: a quick post adventure check can go a long way!

Through the info slides, you'll find information on:
- Simple ways to help prevent problems before they start
- What warning signs to watch for
- Where foxtails and grass seeds like to hide

The goal isn't to avoid the outdoors; it's to enjoy every adventure with a little extra confidence, knowledge and a few minutes of prevention.

Did you know there are two hidden water-related risks every dog owner should know about?πŸ’¦

🐾 Water aspiration (often called "dry drowning")
🐾 Water intoxication (hyperhydration)

Neither are common, but both can become serious if the warning signs are missed.

These slides break down what the signs are, who's most at risk, and how to help keep your dog safe while enjoying everything summer has to offer.

If you found this helpful, save it for later and send it to your favorite adventure buddy. πŸ•Because the best adventures are the ones where everyone gets home safely. β˜€οΈπŸ’¦

Hello πŸ‘‹ I'm Dominique!

I'd like to formally introduce myself and kick off this account!

I'm a Certified Canine First Aid Instructor through Canine Health Canada and a firm believer that learning never stops. For me, dogs have always been more than a passion; I'm endlessly curious about canine health, behavior, communication, and how we can build stronger relationships with our dogs.

My goal is simple: to help owners better understand their dogs, strengthen the bond they share, and make life together happier, healthier, and safer.

When I'm not immersed in that world of learning... (who are we kidding? I'm always in that world! πŸ˜‰πŸ˜†), you'll usually find me adventuring with my husband and our two pups, Baxter and Relic. Whether we're training, hiking, paddleboarding, or simply enjoying the outdoors, being together is where we're happiest.

You may also recognize me as the face behind Furever Moments πŸ“Έ, where I have the honor of capturing memories with your pets that you'll cherish for years to come.

I'm excited to share what I continue to learn, spark conversations, and hopefully help you build a relationship with your dog that's built on understanding, trust, and teamwork; creating a life together that's happy, healthy, and safe.

If you've made it this far, welcome and thank you for being here. 🫢🐾
