The 2026 Prairie North Artist-in-Residence program has come to a close and both artists have returned home until the opening of our fall exhibitions on Thursday, October 15, 2026.

We thank them both for their invigorating creativity and hard work—AGGP looks forward to welcoming our community to the gallery to see the works in person. Today, we hear from Scott Bertram, reflecting on his experience in Grande Prairie over the summer.

In July 2019, AGGP presented “Ecology Is: Human | Nature.”

Reflecting on the exhibition, curator Derrick Chang writes:

“Ecology Is: Human | Nature” reflects the reality that ecology is the biological need to co-exist within nature. The impact of human influence and economic development foregrounds the urgent need for a balanced conversation between industry and the environment. Each artist in the exhibition handles themes related to ‘human nature’, yet the separation between these two terms, ‘human’ and ‘nature’ points out how the long-term impacts on ecological welfare often do not enter the conversation when it comes to short-term economic gain. The well-being of human nature is an imperative that foregrounds the need for sound judgment and decision making when it comes to the future of our economies as they intersect with environmental crises, global warming and the continued viability of extractive industries.”

“Ecology Is: Human | Nature” (July 11, 2019 - October 31, 2019) was curated by Derrick Chang.
The participating artists were: Alana Bartol, Tamara Lee-Anne Cardinal, Carley Freisen, Lyndal Osborne, Marina Roy, and Clint Wilson.

We are grateful for the ongoing support of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (.1991), the City of Grande Prairie (), the County of Grande Prairie, and the Municipal District of Greenview ().

The St. Joe's CHS “Our GP” mural has found its new home at the Northwest Wellness Centre!

Developed through the AGGP’s Youth Mural Project, the artwork explores students’ perspectives on community, identity, place and what Grande Prairie means to them. Students from Ms. Hillaby and Ms. Park’s St. Joseph Catholic High School art classes designed and painted the mural with support from AGGP staff, and it is now proudly displayed for the community to enjoy.

Thank you to the Northwest Wellness Centre for welcoming this artwork onto its walls and to the Grande Prairie DownTown Association for its partnership and assistance in coordinating the mural’s placement. Congratulations to the students for bringing their ideas, creativity and unique perspectives to this project!

We are grateful to the City of Grande Prairie for the grant funding that made the Youth Mural Project possible. We also appreciate the continued support of our partners, including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, County of Grande Prairie No. 1 , the Municipal District of Greenview No. 16 and ATB Financial for their dedication to art education.

Artist Les Ramsay() just wrapped up his time as the 2nd Prairie North Artist-in-Residence, hosted by AGGP and Northwestern Polytechnic this summer. Les will be back this fall with a solo exhibition, part of our exciting re-opening programming!

About his time at Prairie North, Les says: “During this residency I’m developing a new body of work in preparation for my solo exhibition with the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie this October. I’m working on three large paintings alongside a growing group of smaller canvases and needlepoint pieces. Although they share a common visual language, they occupy different roles in the studio.”
