This Friday, join us at the Art Gallery of Golden for the opening reception of The Rare & The Ancient: Defending Golden's Threatened Rainforest. 🌲

This exhibit features over 20 local artists who speak for the forest in this collaborative, educational art display celebrating the Inland Temperate Rainforest. 🫎🍄‍🟫🌨️

Talk with the artists, dine on wine and cheese. We'll see you there on August 14, at 5 PM.

Highlights from “The Art of Migration”, on display until August 7th.

This exhibition is a travelling group show hosted in partnership with the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL). Each piece is created by a different artist residing in the Kootenays who was paired with a newcomer to Canada; their task was to listen to the newcomer’s migration story and translate it into their artistic medium of choice. As a result, this exhibition features eleven stories about the triumphs and challenges faced by these newcomers to Canada, and how “home” is a multilayered experience for all of us.

CBAL is an organization within the Columbia Basin (with an office in Golden) that offers literacy programs and support services for families, youth, adults, and seniors; they also provide language and settlement services for newcomers to the region. AGOG is privileged to host “The Art of Migration” in our gallery space as an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of “home” and how the places we live in are shaped by the lived experiences of others.

Columbia Basin Literacy

“I create to instil a sense of awe and adventure. I want my photos to inspire anyone who sees them to get out there and nurture their appreciation for this planet.”

These are words from Christopher Dehart, () an emerging photographer featured in our exhibition for this month, titled “Yes, This is Home”.

As a proud member of the Shuswap Band, he grew up in the East Kootenay region and began his pursuit of photography in 2019 at age 14. Wildlife was his first focus as it was a way to share with the world what he saw and what he loved. His lens gradually shifted towards landscape imagery, which is largely what is shown in his work feature at AGOG.

June is National Indigenous History Month, an important time to recognize and honour First Nations, Inuit and Métis People. It is a dedicated time to hear and celebrate their stories, voices and perspectives. We invite you to view Christopher’s work at the gallery, on until June 30th, and witness his dedication to capturing the beauty of the natural world.
