The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation is an important day for the Settler Community to consider our Calls to Action. Please save the date and come walking on September 30th.
The Walk is happening in the evening (a lantern-lit walk). This has members of the First Peoples Circle of the Thousand Islands removing the Little Shoes Memorial from the Town Hall front steps (as the permit for the display will have run out on that day), and then walking the shoes towards the several churches that are on Stone Street, where three pairs will be laid before several delegations from the area's various Christian communities. Essentially, this is symbolically laying the Memorial before them to be directly answerable. The delegations will then address the assembly to speak about their own commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. It's an effort to encourage education and accountability, and resolve within the Settler Community to actively work towards Truth and Reconciliation. There will be a smudge, drumming, singing, and a closing ceremony at the First Peoples Park, all organized by the First Peoples Circle of the Thousand Islands with the cooperation of the Municipality of Gananoque.
