Lansdowne Concert Series

Lansdowne Concert Series What are our house concerts all about? Great music by professional artists in the small inmate sett See NOTES for detailed description.

To book a concert with us, please e-mail directly to: [email protected]. To reserve seats for a concert, please e-mail directly to: [email protected]. We began in 2011 and have hosted over 180 concerts to date. Our concerts are what we like to call "listening" events where the audience has a chance to hear every note and every word the artists produce. In fact, we specifically ask guests not to talk during

the performance except between songs. In that sense, it differs from a house party in that the primary purpose is to listen to the concert. It is a relaxed and casual atmosphere where we have lots of interaction between the artists and the audience. Typically, there are two 45-minute sets with a 20-minute intermission. We ask for a fee of $20 or $30 (depending the group size) and all the money goes to the artists. We usually have around 40 to 55 people. People are encouraged to ask questions of the artists between songs - usually there is a lot of story telling leading up to each song. We are listed on www.acousticroof.ca and one way that artists contact us. However, our preference is for artists to send us an e-mail to [email protected]. Concerts usually start at 8 PM but everyone arrives around 7:30 PM and that gives us time to get everyone settled. We provide chairs and glasses for drinks that people choose to bring or plates to serve snacks. Usually people bring something to drink and a snack to share at the intermission, but that is optional. All seats must be reserved in advance by sending us an e-mail to [email protected] or by telephone to 457-0826. Some concerts fill very quickly depending on how well known they are.

This Sask artist won the International Song Competition in Vina Del Mar Chile in 2014 and now, in 2024 he has "made a hit" with King Charles. To be clear ... Charles did not write or perform but he did send a message of best wishes to Jeffery! Oh, and some recent news ... Jeffery was nominated (along with his album 'Great Big Sky') for a 2025 Canadian Folk Music Awards in the category of 'Canadian Contemporary Folk Singer of the Year'!! And ..... Yet More News! Jeffery will be a guest performer on C B C Radio's "THE CURRENT" with host Matt Galloway, being recorded on location in Saskatoon at the Broadway Theatre with a live audience. Nov 26! Magical!

Article by Greg Nikkel, SaskToday, Nov. 1st

U.K. - Saskatchewan-based singer Jeffery Straker has been expanding his fan base with his current tour of the United Kingdom, and includes a new very high profile fan, namely King Charles.

Just before he put on a sold-out show in London on Wednesday, Straker received word that not only had King Charles heard his latest CD, but he was touched by the song Straker wrote for his coronation, and wished him good luck for the remainder of his tour in England.

In a phone interview just before he went on stage on Thursday night at a venue in Northumberland, Straker explained how this came about.

As the king’s coronation approached, he was asked by Lieutenant-Governor Russ Mirasty if he might write a song in honour of the event.

“It’s a big challenge to sing about someone starting a new position,” he said, and he ended penning a song of encouragement that can apply to any person starting a new major chapter in their life, called “Better Than What We Had.”

Straker included it in the CD he released that October, and Lt-Gov. Mirasty arranged to send the CD to Buckingham Palace, to the Royal household, which Straker found out about a month and a half ago, just before he was to start his UK tour.

“I thought, ‘this is amazing! Is King Charles listening to it? Does he have a CD player?’ I knew it was in the palace, and the suspense was killing me,” said Straker.

While on his UK tour, he received a note by e-mail from the Lieutenant-Governor’s office, telling him that not only had His Majesty heard the CD, but he was touched by his song written for the coronation.

“He also sent good wishes to me for my tour in England, and was signed ‘Charles R’,” he said.

He has been talking about the song in his performances, and will now make note of the King’s approval of it.

At his London show, special guests in the audience included the High Commissioner from Canada, former MP Ralph Goodale and his wife Pam, who are also from Regina, and the Agent General for Saskatchewan, who has an office in London.

Explaining more about the song, he said it came from what he was taught by his parents, namely that people should strive to leave the world better than they found it, and his wish for King Charles is that he will do the same.

Straker has been touring with guitar player Bryn Besse, and they play as a piano-guitar duo, which helps make a tour economically more feasible.

“I’m more of a folk-roots singer, so the piano and guitar work really well,” he added.

After Thursday night’s show, they have nine more in 12 days, and they will return to Canada on Remembrance Day, Nov. 11.

The response from his British audiences has been really good, said Straker, noting he had done a tour there two years ago, and some of the fans he made then have returned for his current set of shows.

“We’re seeing people come back, and there’s lots of new faces. In my repertoire I’ve got quite a few songs about Saskatchewan, and people are seeming to really appreciate them,” he added.

“These British audiences listen, and they’re friendly and they buy my merch,” Straker said, noting one fan even brought him a Yorkshire dessert pie.

LANSDOWNE CONCERT SERIES
CAROLINE MARIE BROOKS & BEN KUNDER

By. Martha Vowles
June 20th, Summer Solstice Eve

I’m still humming the final song from last night’s offering in the Lansdowne Concert Series, hosted by Paul and Liz McDonnell. The musical guests were Ben Kunder and Caroline Marie Brooks. Both are well-known on the Canadian folk music scene, Ben as a solo performer and Caroline as one-third of the much-loved Juno Award winners, “The Good Lovelies.”

Ben and Caroline are good friends and musical collaborators, both from the Toronto area.

Ben opened last night with a solo set. His songs fit in the intersection of folk, easy-listening, and americana. His quiet, centred style belies the power and rawness of his words, wrapped in a voice that is strong, solid, and lyrical. His song, “Berlin,” written after a gig in the German capital, on the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, is just one example of how Ben Kunder gives us a glimpse into the essence of the songwriter.
Caroline Marie Brooks’ effervescence and humour served as a wonderful counterpoint to Ben’s more serious and understated performance. Her songwriting echoes themes of family, the complexity and joy of life, and our kinship with the natural world. She’s an engaging performer who connected with last night’s audience effortlessly, and entertained us with stories of her family, life on the road, and her commitment to the environment, while tuning her guitar in between songs. Her voice is a delight to the ear, and her musicianship is impressive.

Ben Kunder and Caroline Marie Brooks are a magical match vocally, and in performance style. There’s still a chance to see them on this tour. They’re performing tonight at "The Cottage" on the Kingston Peninsula, then on to Nova Scotia (Canning, Halifax & Mahone Bay) and the Trailside in PEI. There might still be tickets available for tonight’s concert at The Cottage. Take a look at their page - The Cottage Live Music Venue in Hampton.

Thank you, Liz and Paul McDonnell, for opening your home to bring high-calibre live music to southern NB.

And ... a HUGE thank you to Martha for writing so many excellent reviews for us and doing them so quickly as well. We appreciate your help as well as the generous assistance we get from all our wonderful volunteers and good friends who have come out to so many of our concerts. A very special thank you to Allan Robinson for doing a marvellous job of "sound" for 10 years of concerts, and to Brian Cassidy for his very professional video recordings, which are available to our guests. You make us feel so good.
Cheers ...
Paul & Liz ...

ABOUT CAROLINE & BEN

We are very excited to welcome Caroline & Ben to our Lansdowne Concert Series. They will be touring the East Coast in celebration of a return to live performances and the release of a new single together.

CAROLINE MARIE BROOKS is, of course, 1/3 of the Good Lovelies, a rather famous folk & pop trio who performed here in August 2019. They were so amazing that we actually made up a special award just for them. It was called the "June-O Award". Needless to say, we are thrilled to have Caroline perform here once again. Caroline is a lifelong musician and creator. While best-known as a member of the Good Lovelies, she has also lent her singing and six-string talents to friends like Jim Bryson, Jill Barber, and Ken Yates on projects of their own. With the Good Lovelies, she has produced 9 albums. In 2021, she released her first solo album entitled “Everything at the Same Time”. It is a beautiful collection of 11 songs that ask that we live and be present in the moment and to remember that though the days are long, the years are all too short.

Joël Fafard has played at Lansdowne on three previous occasions, one of which was in 2011 - our first year of hosting concerts. Joël is a singer-songwriter from BC's Sunshine Coast and is currently touring in eastern Canada enrolee to Europe. He sings with the sexy, sandpapered-sounding vocal style of the new-generation bluesman. He tells his hilarious between-song stories with the confidence of a late show host delivering his monologue.
To date, Joël has produced 8 albums (including several instrumental CDs) and won several awards (eg. West Coast Music Association) and had multiple nominations - one of which was a JUNO nomination. Joël strives for authenticity in his recordings which is why he always records live off the floor. NICK GAUTHIER
