Symphony New Brunswick presents its final concert tour of 2025 with En Français, featuring the award-winning Saint John String Quartet. Presented under the auspices of Symphony NB’s acclaimed Virtuoso Series, the program explores the richness of French chamber music with string quartets by Germaine Tailleferre, New Brunswick’s Sophie Dupuis, and Gabriel Fauré.

"The pieces making up our En Français program have been carefully selected to highlight the importance of the French compositional tradition to the string quartet literature”, says Symphony NB Concertmaster Dani Sametz. “In that respect it’s a special kind of ‘French Connection’. Germaine Tailleferre completed her quartet in 1919, which led to her becoming one of “Les Six”, the consortium of leading French composers in post-WWI France. It combines delicate phrasing with rhythmic intensity reminiscent of Ravel’s work, stamped with her own unique voice.

“We wrap up the concert with Gabriel Fauré’s beloved String Quartet Op.121. This was his final composition - he never even had the opportunity to hear it in live public performance. He was virtually deaf by the time he wrote the work, but is still infused with a dreamy quality that transcends the physical world. The sublime slow movement gives way to a spirited finale that surges to an uplifting conclusion.

“These two works bookend our performance of Sophie Dupuis’ String Quartet. We’re thrilled to present it as Canada’s, and indeed New Brunswick’s, contribution to this French connection. Sophie is a past President of the Canadian League of Composers and her work is becoming increasingly acknowledged for her interest in interdisciplinary art and vivid soundscapes.

“In spite of technological advances that are revolutionizing communications in our day, the saying that ‘we all need connection’ seems more real than ever. It’s a joy to connect the dots between these three composers and to share it, En Français, with music lovers in the intimacy of chamber music – an experience that’s truly up close and personal.”

Germaine Tailleferre – String Quartet (1919)

Black Box Productions’ 2025-26 Season of theatre opens
TONIGHT with our first production: Almost Maine.

Welcome to Almost, Maine: a town that isn’t quite a town, because its residents never got around to organizing. On one cold, clear winter night, under the glow of the northern lights, the townsfolk find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised, hearts are broken, but both heal… almost.
This witty, romantic play is told through nine magical vignettes about love and connection. With a strong ensemble cast and plenty of surprises, this midwinter night’s dream will be directed by award-winning theatre artist Ilkay Silk.

Almost, Maine will be presented Nov 26-29 in the Black Box theatre, in Sir James Dunn Hall, on STU Campus.

Show times: 7:30pm nightly, Saturday matinee: 2:00pm
Admission: $10.00 Thursday-Saturday, with opening night (Wed Nov 26th) Pay-What-You-Can.
