Franklin Carmichael (1890–1945) was one of the founding members of the Group of Seven and the youngest of the original members. The group came together in 1920 to develop a distinct approach to Canadian landscape painting.

Before becoming known for his landscapes, Carmichael worked as a commercial artist and designer. His background in design influenced his approach to composition, colour, and simplified forms throughout his career.

Carmichael is particularly known for his watercolours and paintings of the Ontario landscape, often depicting the forests, lakes, and rugged terrain of the Canadian Shield.

J. E. H. MacDonald (1873–1932) was one of the founding members of the Group of Seven, a group of Canadian artists who came together in 1920 to develop a distinct approach to Canadian landscape painting.

Before becoming a full-time painter, MacDonald worked as a commercial artist and designer. He also played an important role in supporting younger Canadian artists and encouraging the development of a national art tradition.

His influence extended beyond his own paintings. MacDonald taught at the Ontario College of Art and helped shape the next generation of Canadian artists.

Kazuo Nakamura (1926–2002) was a Japanese Canadian artist and a founding member of Painters Eleven, the group of Toronto artists formed in 1953 to promote abstract art in Canada.

Nakamura’s work was influenced by both the Canadian landscape tradition and modern abstraction. While many of his early paintings depicted recognizable landscapes, he increasingly explored patterns, geometry, numbers and the underlying structures of nature.

His approach was highly individual. Rather than abandoning nature for abstraction, Nakamura looked for the mathematical and visual order he believed existed within the natural world.

A. J. Casson (1898–1992) joined the Group of Seven in 1926 at the invitation of Franklin Carmichael, replacing Frank Johnston. He was the youngest member of the Group of Seven.

Casson is particularly known for his paintings of southern and central Ontario, including rural landscapes, farms, forests, villages and small-town buildings. His work is often recognized for its clear, simplified forms and strong use of colour.

Unlike some of the Group’s artists who travelled extensively into northern Canada, Casson developed much of his subject matter closer to home. His paintings documented many Ontario communities and landscapes during a period of significant change.

Frank (Franz) Johnston (1888–1949) was one of the original members of the Group of Seven, joining the group at its founding in 1920. Johnston participated in the Group of Seven’s first exhibition in 1920, at the Art Gallery of Toronto (today, the Art Gallery of Ontario) but his time with the group was relatively brief. In 1924, he left to pursue his own artistic direction and later moved to Winnipeg, where he became an important figure in the Manitoba art community.

Despite his shorter association with the Group of Seven, Johnston made an important contribution to the development of Canadian landscape painting.
