Shore Time: Art Design Place

Our final day of Shore Time was a fitting culmination of three days spent sharing stimulating ideas and learning about the ways makers think about creating in relation to time, history and place.

We started the day with Zita Cobb and Todd Saunders, the architect who designed Fogo Island Inn and the four Fogo Island Arts’ artist studios. They considered how to build for time and place: what must stay the same, and what must change for the Inn to still matter in 100 years. A panel discussion with all our participants followed, reflecting on our last three days together.

Participants visited studios in the afternoon and joined another guided hike, tour, or excursion, before reconvening at the Orange Lodge for farewell tea and cake.

Our last day came to a close with a gathering at JK Contemporary, where we shared the experience of Shore Time, surrounded by the work of former FIA artist Teresa Baker.

Shore Time: Art Design Place

The second day brought us insightful and inspiring conversations focused on painting, crafting, designing, making, and place, with R. H. Quatyman and Tom McDonough. Followed by Sebastian Herkner in discussion with Tommy Smythe, where Sebastian shared the Fogo Boat, his new design made in collaboration with Fogo Island Workshops.

During the afternoon, our participants chose their own itinerary – visiting artists and makers studios, before joining one of our offered guided tours and excursions.

Shore Time: Art Design Place

We opened Shore Time with welcome remarks from Shorefast on Fogo Island CEO, Zita Cobb, Kitty Scott (Fogo Island Arts) and celebrated archaeologist Michael Shanks. The day featured thought-provoking conversations between Leonor Antunes and Tom McDonough, followed by Glenn Pushelberg and Zita, and opportunities to venture out and visit studios around the island.

An after-hours celebration at The Storehouse with local musicians, brought the first day to an end.

From Oct. 1-3, artists, designers, curators and thinkers will gather for three days of conversation about art, design and place. We're thrilled to kick off our second-ever Shore Time with all of you.

This year's Shore Time is sold out, bringing together a full house for all events.

On Thursday, September 24 at 5 PM, join us at the Orange Lodge in Joe Batt's Arm for a talk by artist Mathilda Munsch.

Mathilda Munsch lives and works in Paris, where she recently graduated from the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris.

Munsch's work spans drawing, installation, assemblage, writing, and found materials. Her practice often begins with fragments: discarded objects, scraps, stains, shadows, and materials encountered in everyday life. Through making, these things can shift into a landscape, a body, an imagined space, or simply a form that seems to have acquired a life of its own.

She is interested in the ways materials can transform and behave - things that sag, leak, stretch, harden, accumulate, become transparent, or unexpectedly beautiful. Across different mediums, she follows connections between images, materials, gestures, accidents, and memories, allowing works to move between the two-dimensional and the spatial. Her approach develops through thinking with materials: letting images emerge, allowing accidents to become propositions, and giving forms time to develop before deciding exactly what they are.

The talk will focus on recent work, including her 2026 diploma installation, "preserve and pickle your limbs until they'll emerge from their gelatinous lethargy…"

The next day, on September 25, between 10 AM and 8 PM, Munsch will host an open studio at the Long Studio.
