Our resident Guinea Fowl, Finigingin, has officially mastered the art of stealth and camouflage! This bird loves to explore, blend into the landscape, and keep us all guessing.

Every Monday we post the photos of Finigingin and where we have found him hiding on the property over the last weekā€¦ he broke into the house multiple times, tried to steal the reclining chair and take a nap in our bedā€¦ etc

It still doesn't feel real, and we're both in complete shock that sheā€™s really gone. To lose her so suddenly and tragically, has left us completely heartbroken. šŸ’”
There are no words to truly prepare your heart for the weight of a loss like this.

Iris may have only been with us for a short three months, but the light, joy, and sweet energy she brought into our lives left an imprint that will stay with us forever. From the second she arrived, Iris stole the spotlight. She was curious, spirited, and possessed that pure puppy sweetness that instantly turned ordinary days into something soft and memorable.

We will always laugh remembering her sitting up front and trying to take the wheel on car ridesā€”she really thought she was the one driving the car. Whether she was pouncing through the yard, tucking in for a cozy, well-earned nap, or giving us those soulful eyes that could melt any moment, Iris filled our home with so much love.

Though her time with us was heartbreakingly brief, every single second was cherished.

Run free, sweet Iris. You were loved beyond measure, and you will be missed every single day. šŸ¤šŸ¾

Late August foraging brought an unexpected double prize along the sunny fields edge: a small basket of ripe elderberries and a quiet moment with a Monarch caterpillar.

The Elderberry Harvest: Jay scanned the thicket for heavy, drooping clusters of ink-black berries with bright magenta stems. They are perfect for winter syrup, provided you cook them firstā€”raw elderberries, stems, and leaves contain toxic compounds that cause stomach upset.

The Monarch Encounter: Tucked beneath a milkweed leaf right next to the berries was a plump, yellow-black-and-white striped Monarch caterpillar. Milkweed is its exclusive host plant; eating the sap makes the caterpillar toxic to birds and predators.

Foraging is a good reminder to tread lightly: take only a portion of the berries, leave the rest for the birds, and let the milkweed stand for the next generation of butterflies.

Life & Homestead
The Day Job: By day, I work full-time from home for a bank.
The Flock: Outside of work hours, youā€™ll find me out with our sweet feather babiesā€”chickens, ducks, turkeys, Guinea fowl, and button quail!
The Dog Pack: Life is delightfully noisy and cozy with our four pups: Maverick, Thompson, Juno, and little Iris.
Kitchen & Harvest: When Iā€™m not out in the garden or with the birds, Iā€™m usually baking fresh bread, canning, or pickling up something tasty.

Behind every sunlit photo on your feed is a frame that cuts out 90% of the real picture.

Social media is a masterclass in selective framing. We share the gorgeous sunset, the finished project, or the quiet moment of victory. What stays off-camera is the mess just two inches to the left of the lens.

The pristine finished project doesnā€™t show the three failed attempts, the spilled supplies, or the back pain from sitting at a workbench for six hours.

The serene picture of a quiet morning ignores the chaotic hour of chores, noise, and literal mud you waded through just to sit down for five minutes.

The bright, smiling update doesn't capture the exhaustion, the self-doubt, or the friction right before the camera clicked.

Ah, the glamorous life of marrying into elite livestock management.

Currently cozying up for movie night with the love of my life, her endless devotion, and ā€œlittle chickenā€, who is currently resting her mildly sprained ankle inside a standard-issue colander right on our freshly washed duvet.
Because why use a dog crate in the barn when you can turn our master bedroom into a 5-star avian intensive care unit?

Evening Itinerary:
7:00 PM: Pop popcorn.
7:05 PM: Retrieve a kitchen utensil to serve as an orthopedic nest.
7:10 PM: Dim the lights so the patient doesn't experience "bedside anxiety."
7:15 PM: Realize I am now third in the household hierarchy, behind the wife and a minorly inconvenienced chicken.

She told me marriage was about shared responsibilities. She just conveniently left out the part where those responsibilities include monitoring a farm animal's bowel movements via commercial breaks.

If anyone needs me, Iā€™ll be over here trying not to make sudden movements so I don't agitate the colander.
