Opening Reception: Friday, August 7, 7-9 p.m.

In this exhibit, 4 artists - a fabric artist, a bead artist, an astrophotographer and a poet - converge to share our deep attachment to the beauties of the starry firmament and encourage you to reconnect with the stars above. It is our profound wish that you will find joy and inspiration as you ponder Our Precious Night Sky.

Featured Artists
Margaret Nazon (Bead Artist)
A Gwich’in artist from Tsiigehtchic, Northwest Territories, Margaret transforms her lifelong fascination with the stars into vibrant beadwork inspired by galaxies, nebulae, and the wonders of the cosmos.

Evelyn Martin (Fabric Artist)
A retired art teacher, Evelyn creates richly layered textile landscapes inspired by the night sky, auroras, and moonlit journeys, using fabric, fibres, beads, and thread to capture the beauty of the night.

Brian Martin (Astrophotographer)
A retired astronomer and professor, Brian photographs Alberta’s night skies to reveal the colour, wonder, and fragility of our celestial landscape through carefully crafted astrophotography.

Anna Marie Sewell (Poet)
Edmonton’s fourth Poet Laureate (2011-13), Anna Marie Sewell is a Mi’gmaq/Anishinaabe/Polish poet, cultural educator, and collaborator whose work explores connections between culture, language, storytelling, and place.

We’re still buzzing from last night’s celebration for the 40th anniversary of McMullen Gallery and The University of Alberta Hospitals Art Collection.

It was an honour to have so many of the artists represented in our collection and in the exhibition “While We Wait and Heal” in attendance.

NOW ON! While We Wait and Heal: 40 Years of the U of A Hospital Art Collection celebrates the enduring legacy of Bill McMullen’s remarkable vision to give patients at the “new” (1986) U of A Hospital access to art. Bringing selected works from the collection together within the gallery that bears McMullen’s name, this exhibition offers a glimpse into forty years of thoughtful collecting and community support. Donors, staff, and friends of the University Hospital Foundation’s Arts in Health program have selected and reflected on works that hold particular meaning for them, sharing personal perspectives on the role art can play in places of healing.

As we mark the 40th anniversary of the UAH Art Collection, we invite you to pause, look closely, and discover moments of wonder throughout this exhibition. Research continues to affirm what Bill McMullen understood instinctively all those years ago: art has the power to bring beauty and humanity to health care spaces—to sustain us, connect us, and accompany us as we wait and heal. “Stories from the Valley” was inspired by UAH Physicians’ and staff members’ personal reflections and shared connections to Edmonton’s river valley. This project weaves together individual stories into a collective portrait of place, care, and community.
