We are excited to announce the arrival of Zuri, a 23-year-old male ring-tailed lemur! Zuri recently joined us from the Granby Zoo and has been introduced as a companion to our 16-year-ol female ring-tailed lemur, Juliet. Introductions have gone well and we look forward to seeing their relationship continue to develop!

Ring-tailed lemurs are endemic to Madagascar, meaning they are found in the wild nowhere else in the world. They are endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and the pet trade.

Did you know? Each ring-tailed lemur has exactly 13 alternating black and white bands on its tail.

Planning a visit to the Zoo soon? ☀️

The fences are going up for our exciting Enclosure Renewal and Enhancement Project and here’s what you need to know to make sure your next visit is as smooth as possible:

🚧 Active Construction: You may see fenced-off zones and encounter localized noise or dust.

🚶‍♂️ Temporary Detours: Some pathways may be rerouted to keep everyone safe. Please follow all directional signage!

🐾 Animal Visibility: Some animals have been moved to allow for safe construction, and others may temporarily rest in behind-the-scenes habitats while work occurs nearby. Our animal care team is monitoring all animal residents closely.

Happy International Goat Day! 🐐

Today we’re celebrating some of the smartest, most curious animals at the Edmonton Valley Zoo.

Our herd of Toggenburgs (a Swiss breed known for milk production) loves to climb, explore, and keep a very close eye on snack time 🌿

If you’ve spent time around them, you might notice their herd hierarchy in action. They constantly negotiate who gets top spot for food, prime lounge spots, and attention from visitors. Right now, clever Merriweather is sitting right at the top of the ladder! 👑

Pro tip for your next visit: remember to look up! The goats have their own rooftop space at the Urban Farm, so you’ll often catch them roaming around high above the walkway.

Drop a 🐐 in the comments to send Merriweather and the herd some love today!

Big things are happening at the Edmonton Valley Zoo! 🏗️

We are embarking on the next phase of our Enclosure Renewal and Enhancement Project. This project focuses on modernizing habitats to elevate animal welfare and prepare for our upcoming international accreditation applications.

Are we still open? Yes! 🐫

We remain open throughout construction and look forward to welcoming you. Phase Two construction is kicking off this summer and will run through 2028, focusing on elephant amenities, carnivore enclosures and an Arctic Shores shade structure.

Thank you for your patience and support as we build an even better zoo for our animals and our community.

Happy International Armadillo Day! 🦔✨

Having an absolute ball over here at the Edmonton Valley Zoo!

Check out our resident armadillo exploring their favorite sensory setup. Those colorful ball pit balls were gifted directly to our animals through our Enrichment Wishlist.

Enrichment plays a vital role in animal care; it encourages natural digging, foraging, and play behaviors that keep our residents healthy, curious, and active every single day.

Want to spoil your favourite animal at the Zoo? Browse our Enrichment Wishlist to purchase items for them, then watch for them in action on our social media!

🐘 On this World Elephant Day, we'd like to provide an update on Lucy's foot health!

Keeping an elephant healthy starts from the ground up. Our team recently welcomed back Mike McClure, an elephant foot-care expert, to help with a routine foot check on Lucy. These regular checks are an important part of providing excellent care and helping keep those mighty feet healthy and comfortable.

We’re so proud of our animal team for their dedication, teamwork, and commitment to doing what’s best for Lucy and all of the animals here at the !

Take a peek behind the scenes at this important part of elephant care.

Happy International Cat Day! 🐾 Meet Blade, a very serval special cat!

Blade arrived at the Edmonton Valley Zoo in late 2023 after being confiscated by Alberta Fish & Wildlife Enforcement. Today, this 3-year-old serval has grown into a confident, curious (and sassy!) ambassador for his species.

While servals are striking, they are wild animals with specialized needs - not pets. In Alberta, it is illegal to possess or import a serval without strict permits. Blade’s story is a reminder of the importance of making responsible animal choices and stopping the illegal wildlife trade.

🌿 Exciting News! Through Project Carnivora, we are building Blade a brand-new 300 m² savannah habitat to recreate his natural home!

Stay tuned for updates as his new space comes to life!
