thank you Brittany Rudyck for meeting with us, and talking not your final girl fest stuff!

less than two weeks away!

Her bloody, half naked, brutalized body is in clear focus as she limps through a swamp or forest, her mind, though tired and traumatized, remains firm in her resolve to survive. She is the final girl.

Our this Wednesday is the lead of Suspiria (1977), the 2nd film to be featured in fest, Suzy Bannion! Played by the amazing Jessica Harper. Did you know that the co-writer of Suspiria, Daria Nicolodi, almost played the role of Suzy instead of Harper? However, that never came to be, due to injury and last minute decisions. Daria can still be seen as an extra in the opening minute of the film at the airport wearing a red blouse and carrying a large bag on the left of the screen!🔪also, can we talk about suzy’s amazing eyebrows?

not your final girl fest presents Ich seh Ich seh / Goodnight Mommy (2014) the brilliant austrian horror tale of two twin brothers and their mother. it’s safe to say that this film has stuck with both of us since initially watching it, as it shows vanity & motherhood in its most terrifying and pure form.

Not Your Final Girl Fest

Not Your Final Girl Fest is a weekend celebration of contemporary and classic film, providing engaging discourse and cultural reflection of feminist cinema within the binds of horror and genre film. Historically, the female archetype in horror and genre films falls into s*xualization and victimization. The final girl is the stereotypical surviving female protagonist, frequently portrayed as an underdeveloped character and as an overt s*x symbol—NYFG fest aims to showcase films where female protagonists are multidimensional and able to express the emotions that women are so often told to suppress, destroying preconceived notions of feminine passivity and weakness. The films featured in NYFG fest frame these traits as strengths and tenacity instead of infirmity… often resulting in terror and bloodshed.

Part of the Metro Cinema’s Guest Curator series, programmed & coordinated by Georgia Couglan & Nicole Boychuk, NYFG takes place October 17 th, 18th &20th. This is the second installment of NYFG.

NYFG Fest took place October 27-29th, 2018 with proceeds from the festival being donated to S.A.C.E: Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton. NYFG Fest is sponsored by Yellowhead Brewing Co. & Black Fly Beverages.
