Imaginary Circumstances

Imaginary Circumstances A dynamic mobile Fredericton theatre company. Professional Process. Outstanding Theatre. Currently based out of Edmonton, Alberta.

Welcome to Imaginary Circumstances, a dynamic theatre company co-founded and run by freelance director Alexander Donovan. The company began in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 2013 when former Artistic Director and co-founder James Corbett and Alexander Donovan produced “Thom Pain: Based on Nothing” by Will Eno for the “Theatre New Brunswick Presents…” series. They went on to work for Theatre New Bru

nswick a second time by producing the play “The Honour of the Crown” at the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres opening ceremony in 2014. Imaginary Circumstances went through a series of changes after this show when Artistic Director James Corbett stepped down and Alexander Donovan stepped up as the new AD. Alexander, with the help of a crack team, brought in Devin Luke to direct Daniel MacIvor’s “Never Swim Alone” while Alexander directed MacIvor’s “This is a Play”. After the success of that production, many of the team members became members of the Executive including Crystal Chettiar, Tricia Harrity, and Barry McCluskey. Other members of the production became company members including Justine Koroscil, Jack Harris and Laura Gallivan. This new group would go on to produce a musical r***e and staged reading of Anthony Neilson’s “The Wonderful World of Dissocia” as well as a series of workshops run by Crystal Chettiar and Alexander Donovan. After this production in 2015, the company went on a hiatus. Many of its former members have gone off to theatre school or are working professionally in the field. The company was revived from hiatus in 2017 with the new production of Brittany Reid’s “Justified Sinners”. Our logo is designed by Michael Sinclaire. Imaginary Circumstances Theatre Company is proud to announce it's spring show -- "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee"!

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a musical comedy by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin. The show centers on a fictional spelling bee set in the geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents teetering on the precipice of puberty compete against one another to be the Champion of the Bee. A former Bee Champion, a dejected vice-principal, and a parolee preside over the ceremonies. The show is a non-stop roller coaster of laughs involving magic feet, unfortunate erections, and words like Xerophthalmiology or Lysergic acid diethylamide! And those are just some of the easy words at the 25th Annual Putman County Spelling Bee!

Our Artistic Director, Alex Donovan, was interviewed by Grid City Magazine about theatre in Fredericton! Check out the interview and make sure to like Grid City on Facebook!

In our new series Centre Stage, Grid City asks Fredericton theatre personalities to help shed some light on the city’s vibrant theatre scene. This week we hear from Imaginary Circumstances' Artistic Producer Alex Donovan. What’s your favourite city performance venue? Unfortunately my answer for this one is incredibly biased. I have a fondness for Memorial Hall on UNB's campus because that theatre is where I really feel like I began maturing as a theatre artist. [ 824 more words. ]

We are very proud to say that our shows were a great success! Stay tuned to our page to learn more about our plans for the future.

But until then we'd like to once again thank our sponsors who helped make this possible. Here are two of our biggest sponsors: Picaroons Traditional Ales and Vault 29! Check them out on Facebook!

Picaroons generously sponsored the rental of the Ted Daigle Auditorium on STU's campus. This allowed us to have a wonderful venue to perform our shows in.

Vault 29 agreed to be our official Dining Sponsor and so we held our opening night reception in their fine restaurant! Check both of these great local business' downtown on Queen Street.
