Opera Pub is back October 21 at The Druid Irish Pub for another night of great company, soaring vocals, and of course, a few surprises along the way.

Remember: this isn’t a “shhh in your seat” kind of night. Opera Pub is where music meets mischief. If a high note knocks your socks off, let the singers know! Cheers and applause are always welcome.

Got any plans for World Opera Day? We know just the thing!

Join us on the evening of October 25 for a free, intimate evening of song and opera, featuring Canadian-Armenian bass-baritone Vartan Gabrielian and pianist Frances Armstrong.

The first half of the program journeys through two distinctive song cycles with selections from Schubert’s Schwanengesang and Jacques Ibert’s Don Quichotte. Following an intermission, Vartan turns to the operatic stage with a selection of arias showcasing the drama, colour, and power of the bass-baritone voice.

Events from the Opera Community:

NUOVA Vocal Arts launched its first-ever fall production with Fun Home, the Tony Award-winning musical based on Alison Bechdel’s acclaimed graphic memoir.

Looking back from adulthood, cartoonist Alison Bechdel attempts to draw her family’s story - and, in particular, to understand her brilliant, complicated and elusive father. Moving between Alison’s childhood, university years and adult life, the musical reveals a family shaped by affection, artistry and long-held secrets. As Alison revisits the past, she begins to recognize the unexpected parallels between her life and her father’s.

“At the heart of Fun Home is an artist trying to draw her way back into her own life,” says director Benjamin Smith. “Alison isn’t simply remembering the past - she is shaping it, questioning it and looking at it again from every possible angle. What I find so moving is that she never arrives at an easy answer. Instead, the act of remembering allows her to see her parents, her father and ultimately herself with greater clarity and compassion.”

Featuring Jeanine Tesori’s celebrated contemporary score, the production stars Edmonton favourites Jaimi Reese as Alison Bechdel, Doug Mertz as Bruce Bechdel and Kim Mattice-Wanat as Helen Bechdel. Directed by Benjamin Smith with music direction by Simon Abbott, Fun Home is an intimate 80-minute, one-act musical playing October 1-4 at the Westbury Theatre in the Fringe Theatre Arts Barns on Whyte Avenue.
