SNAP Gallery and Printshop () is a long standing  community-based space where you can learn to silkscreen, see a letterpress in action, and take in  some sweet art in the front gallery: SNAP has it all. You can also take home affordably priced prints and swag from their art store! Always worth a stop in, and it’s just north of Macewan University’s downtown campus - look for the great murals on the buildings around these blocks!

The Colombian Coffee Bar and Roaster THE COLOMBIAN has a few sweet locations around Edmonton. The cafes also have a delish food menu - the avocado toast and donuts have some serious fans out there! Bonus: if you stop by the Mill Creek location, Porchlight Books and Franks are right across the street.‍

Tucked away into what used to be a neighbourhood laundromat, Ace Garneau is a much favoured outpost of the ACE coffee shops. Surrounded by the big leafy trees of the Garneau neighbourhood, it’s a treat to stop in to this spot’s modern vibe, indoors or on the patio, winter or summer. Great sandwiches, great coffee, nice folks behind the bar. If you’re anywhere near the University of Alberta campus or hospital this Ace location is your best bet. Bonus: Sepp’s Pizza serves pizza out of the back alley window of this building.PS - If you remember this place as Leva, well, us too. We still trip up and call it that sometimes!

Iconoclast Coffee Roasters () is an ultra-cozy café with great burgers, brunch, and neighbourhood vibes in the Oliver Exchange building in Wîhkwêntôwin.

It’s a longtime local gem...stay for all the plants and the chess games too!

The owners also run Lovesong Bistro (.farm) in the same complex, so you can go from daytime to nighttime while only walking a few steps.

Edmos, it starts today and it’s a sure sign of spring around the corner: it’s Arch Madness time! Started in 2021 by Dan Rose, Arch Madness is everyone’s favourite local Edmonton architecture and heritage online bracket tournament. It happens once a year on Instagram (.unsupervised), so do not miss (and do enjoy the fine buildings this city has to offer). 23 days of voting awaits, and only one building will be declared the winner (queue the tears!)

Bistro Praha is a legendary Edmonton institution serving up eastern European food with old-world vibes. On any given night you’ll find a mix of symphony goers, the hockey jersey set, and probably some artists inside - the restaurant has survived a fire and moved twice. Now that we think about it, Bistro Praha is probably invincible. They reopen Feb 28 after a temporary maintenance closure so get in there!

Have the tartare, have the schnitzel, have the fried bread, and stay for creaky chairs and  enormous photo of a mountain scene. The friendly mood is unbeatable - oh, and maybe you’re lucky enough to be sitting on the chair Joni Mitchell autographed?

Edmonton’s indie coffee shops are a cut above! One of the best of the best of the best has got to be cozy Coffee Bureau on Jasper Ave and they turn 11 today (happy birthday 🎂 )! CB makes an art of making you feel at home with a perfect conversation and serving up perfect Ace espresso (also roasted in Edmonton).

There are two locations of Coffee Bureau, and both serve up the smoothest Italian blend in town with the nicest folks behind the espresso machine.

They also sell St. Viateur bagels direct from Montreal, for which we are all thankful. The second Coffee Bureau location is further west, off 124st in the Mercury Block in Wîhkwêntôwin - be sure to check out the green terrazzo counter by designer at that location. #

There is no end to the beautiful objects you can weave, craft and make at Fern’s School of Craft !

• The school offers a variety of top notch workshops and supplies in traditional fibre crafts like weaving, rug hooking, macrame, and rug braiding. The classes sell out quick, so make sure you’re ready for those class drops!

• It’s all run by master weaver Fern Facette, and warning: you’re going to start setting kijiji alerts for your very own loom.

• The space is shared with Former and Latter fabrics so there’s also more textile and craft fun to be had!‍‍

We’re on a bookstore roll! Audrey’s Books () is Edmonton’s oldest independent bookstore, around since 1975 and serving up new books in a fifty year old space on Jasper Ave chock full of literary history.

• This is the OG Edmonton indie bookstore and it had its start from writer Mel Hurtig. Fun fact: the bookstore’s name comes from not one but two Audreys who were involved in buying the bookshop from Hurtig. Don’t miss the staff picks shelf!

• Once you’re done with your book browsing, pop in to the Commodore restaurant (.restaurant) next door for a greasy spoon breakfast - it’s a classic and probably Edmonton’s oldest diner.

Edmonton is a haven for bibliophiles, and Paper Birch Books () is hands down the coziest indie bookshop in the city. The bookshop has true writer’s heart in Edmonton’s Little Italy neighbourhood just north of downtown.

• The owners, writers and artists Céline Chuang and Benjamin Hertwig, host events and have a tiny espresso bar - you’ll get lost in this place in the best way ever!

• The bookshop is in the Piazza, next door to the new Earth’s Refillery Co-op (), and in a cluster of local shops across the street from the Italian Centre (), Zocalo (), and Giovanni Caboto Park so maybe make an afternoon of it!

Edmonton is a haven for bibliophiles, and Porchlight Books () is a perfect example. Started by writer Michael Hingston, and rumour has it he used to sell books straight from his house, but only when the porchlight was on.

• One of the newest gems in Edmonton’s ever-growing indie bookstore scene, this Mill Creek shop is a bright and modern addition to 99th Street, just east of Strathcona.

• After you’re done browsing, don’t miss Frank’s Community Pub () next door, plus the Colombian coffee roasters () is right across the road, so you’ve got lots of spots to read your new finds in peace.
