Northern Light Theatre

Northern Light Theatre We value our position on the far end of the spectrum in theatre filling a unique role as outspoken, purposefully-controversial, & boundary-pushing.

Under the creative imagination of the current Artistic Director, Trevor Schmidt, Northern Light Theatre produces three evocative theatrical events per season. Northern Light Theatre was founded in 1975 by Scott Swan and Allan Lysell as Edmonton's first lunch-hour theatre company. Northern Light Theatre (NLT) performed in the Edmonton Art Gallery Theatre weekdays at noon - a lunch box performance f

or $2. In the first season, 1975/76, NLT presented eighteen one-act productions, including musical revues, classics, and Canadian plays both old and new. Throughout the 70's and 80's, the company produced an astonishing number and variety of plays every year, showcasing the work of local playwrights like Jim De Felice, alongside dramas by Shaw and Brecht, taking on musical comedy, prairie drama, children's theatre and classics with never-flagging verve. In the summer of 1980, “As You Like It” and “A Midsummer Night's Dream” played in repertoire under a huge tent on Connors Hill giving Edmonton its first taste of Shakespeare in the Park.

“One of Edmonton theatre’s most consistently surprising little companies...” ~ Liz Nicholls, Edmonton Journal

In 2009, after twenty-nine years occupying The Third Space (as both a theatre venue and an office), Northern Light Theatre established new space across the river in Old Strathcona. 2017/18 - our 42nd Season - sees us operating out of offices on Whyte Avenue and producing our plays at the ATB Arts Barns and with L'UniThéâtre at La Cité Francophone. After forty-five years in business, Northern Light Theatre's mandate is still to challenge both artist and audience alike by producing and developing provocative scripts – language rich texts that are dark, poetic, funny – which reflect a complex world and lead us to question our hierarchy of values.

We thrive on bringing you unique, dark, funny, provocative, sensational, and always interesting stories no one else will tell. We do it in the intimate Studio Theatre at Fringe Theatre Arts Barns, like this set for Calgary playwright Stephen Massicotte's Pervert, a story taking an intimate, humorous look at everyday people exploring p**n shops and their erotic desires.

As we wrap up our 50th Season we ask you to consider donating $50, either one time or monthly, so we can continue to tell our stories in our favourite space. Thank you for your support this season and into the future.

Only NLT produces dark, satirical plays like The Ecstatics during our 2011-2012 season, a story whereby two nuns awaken to discover every nun in the convent is dead trying to become angels. As The Edmonton Journal said, "Under Trevor Schmidt’s direction, it was a riotous vaudeville. Go shameless or go home."

That's what we do at NLT. Help us continue to tell great stories in ways no one else does. Donate $50 today or monthly today.

During our 2020-2021 season we produced an online season with plays like Something Unspoken, featuring Patricia Darbasie and Davina Stewart, directed by Trevor Schmidt and filmed by Ian Jackson.

With a well-known playwright like Tennessee Williams we continue to produce scripts with intense, repressed, and sexual language in unique ways to engage our audiences, even during a pandemic.

Please consider donating $50, either one time, or monthly, in recognition of this amazing milestone through the link in our comments, and help us continue to present challenging and engaging stories on stage.

Yesterday we closed the final show of our 50th Season, the unique, extraordinary, and very different REQUEST PROGRAMME. The play featured a different actor from our community, and our history, with each performance. And every song on the radio during the show was performed but an Edmonton singer/songwriter.

Closing Saturday featured a Matinee with Janelle Jorde and an Evening show with Linda Grass.

During the past season we encouraged everyone to contribute to our 50 for 50 Years Campaign. With plays like REQUEST PROGRAMME, your support helps us do what we do best: challenge both artist and audience by producing and developing provocative scripts — language rich texts that are dark, poetic, funny — which reflect a complex world, and lead us to question our hierarchy of values.
