And last but not least, this self-portrait triptych was made with my own hair.

Back in 2023, I shaved my head for this project. I hadn’t cut my hair since immigrating to Canada, so for me, it held many memories and stories. Cutting it was the first step towards a new chapter in my artistic practice.
 
This artwork, along with all the other pieces I’ve previously shared from this series, will be featured this October at Stride Gallery.

The next artwork I will be sharing is this piece, created using Nicole Tritter hair.

Nicole’s conversation centered on themes of belonging, roots, community connection and decolonization.
 
Nicole’s conversation, along with all the others, will be featured this October as part of Shorn’s exhibition.

This artwork was created using wangyu.art ‘s hair as part of my project Shorn.
 
Jia Yang’s conversation centered on the importance of cultural literacy and understanding diverse cultures, experiences, and backgrounds.
 
Stay tuned for Shorn’s exhibition this October, where all the conversations  and artworks from this first phase of the project will be featured.

Next up from the Shorn series is this palette work created using Kt Furness Ceramics ‘s hair.

Kt’s conversation centered on childhood experiences, the importance of hair as a form of self-expression, and how easily we can take it for granted until we loose it.

Our conversation was deeply moving and cathartic, and it will be featured this October as part of Shorn exhibition.

First artwork from Shorn that I’ll be sharing is this baby sweater. It was created using Avril Lopez ‘s hair and was inspired by a conversation we had back in 2023, when I first started this project.

Avril’s hair travelled all the way from Ontario, and it was here in Calgary, where we met, that I patiently spun and crocheted it into this piece.

Our conversation explored themes of childhood memories, what we leave behind, and what we hope to pass on to future generations.

This October, I’ll be exhibiting this artwork alongside a video documenting the conversations that shaped the first phase of the project. Stay tuned for more information.
