I guess it’s a volcano.

by Hilary Mussell

Cement and recycled fabric

Hilary: Okay, so what is this thing? What’s that thing?
Alma: A volcano.
Hilary: A volcano? What’s it for?
Alma: It’s for making sounds.
Hilary: It’s for making sounds? What do you mean?
Alma: Bats make sounds!
Hilary: They do.
Alma: They make emotional sounds that help them communicate.
Hilary: Alma, what’s inside this volcano? What’s in there?
Alma: Magma. [pause] Um, what does it eat?
Hilary: The volcano? What does it eat?
Alma: Magma, and other volcanoes.
Hilary: It eats other volcanoes? Can you climb inside this volcano?
Alma: No.
Hilary: No, why not?
Alma: Alma is going to leave the noodles right there.
Hilary: Okay, you leave your noodles on the ground there. Did you test it out, did you see if it works?
Alma: Um, it blows fire out. What, what does it have?
Hilary: The volcano? It has a bump on it.
Alma: It’s bumpy. Hills are bumpy and cold.

OPEN EYES / EYES OPEN

by NASARIMBA

Wood, aerosol, latex, new and reclaimed hardware

Open Eyes / Eyes Open reminds us that within the city’s streets and alleys, there exists a multitude of expressions of human creativity and individuality. Public art, hidden gardens, eclectic stacks of objects, and disregarded construction artifacts—all contribute to an understanding of modern existence. Through this sculpture, we aim to inspire viewers to open their eyes, both metaphorically and literally, to the beauty and complexity of the urban playground that surrounds us.

BREATHING STEEL

by Wendy Dawson

Breathing Steel captures my desire to challenge relationships of balance, tension and weight—thus creating a threat from pressure and imbalance. The sculpture still manages to use steel to be playful and delicate. In my old age, I want to play and I want others to feel the playfulness of my creations, Breathing Steel is my latest sculpture to feature this relationship. It uses line to direct the eye, and creates spaces and hollows—places to go within the sculpture. I think these places add whimsy and invite play, despite the weight and the menace of steel.

I breathe out large—I have been a big woman all my life and my sculptures reflect my sense of self in the world. I demand to be heard!

I know what draws me to steel. It is solid, like me. And it is immediate. I am not a patient person and using metal with its own history adds story, contradiction, and ironic juxtaposition. Recycling metal yards offer so much possibility!

A SKY AS BIG AS THE SUN

by Dara Humniski

Wood, plywood, Latex paint

We live on the prairies, full of sky and deep horizon lines. I wanted to make a new landscape with both structural and ephemeral parts, something that shifts your sense of scale and gently messes with your depth perception. There are a few subtle nods to public artworks that made a difference in how I think about art, like a waterfall, tile works, using grids, works depicting (and also made of) clouds.

With drawings I tend to always show the natural world, but I often include repetition or some method of mechanical reproduction, like using and recycling stencils, transfer paper, stamps, etc. I also think about archetypes and proxies, clones and flatness, which gets interesting though a lens of sustainability, science fiction and thinking about the future.

PORTAL

by Nickelas “Smokey” Johnson

Reclaimed wood and harvested playground parts

A word, a song, a prophecy
A drunkard, a child
Through the cosmic throat and out my horrid maw,
Tumble all ye faithful down my tongue and onto the lawn.
Climb the ladder into my mind
Watch thru my eyes,
The unclean mob
Watch thru my eyes,
The cloven moon
Spoken, sung, seen, spat, spawned
The waxing night, the waning dawn

Portal is installed as part of Unstructured, a group show of play-sculpture, on display in the Lowlands Yards until September 3, 2023.
