I attended a letterpress workshop this weekend at and we were asked to come up with an image to carve on lino and a corresponding quote so we could learn to set type.
I thought about this for a while and kept coming back to that feeling of community that I experienced a few weeks ago for my birthday. Growing up in a Chinese household meant that a lot of celebrations revolved around sharing meals and food was central to any expressions of love. Friends and family didn't just say hello to you, they wondered when you last ate. Inevitably, despite what answer was provided, more offerings of food would appear and any refusals would be met with vehement objection. And that's what I really missed during my last 3 Pandemic birthdays, that sense of eating together and sharing time together and getting to offer your love through food. So “你吃了吗” - have you eaten yet - is my hope that no matter where I am, what I am doing, I will never lose that sense of community.

I made this print because I have such love for trees. I have many happy memories of growing up in my Brandon neighborhood amongst mature trees that would sway above my head like protective giants on my walks to school. In the spring, they were the first happy signs of life. In the summer, they were natural air conditioners. In the fall, they were beautiful displays of colour. In the winter: resting places for delicate hoarfrost.
To this day, I still gravitate towards these types of neighborhoods. Recently, I've been reading about the environmental and social benefits of cities that create tree canopies. It all makes so much sense when you stop to think about it.

I've been absent here because I accepted a promotion at work at the end of April. I knew I would have to devote a lot of time to my new role during this transition period and predictably, it has not left me much time to do anything else. Today, I allowed myself to be immersed in the smell of lino, the feel of the gouges in my palms, and the sound of nature outside my window and I feel rejuvenated.

This is for the friends who don't live in the Prairies and have been making me jealous with pictures of their magnolia blossoms for weeks (you know who you are).

If we have to have winter, let it be filled with conifers bent with the weight of fresh snow, mountain ash berries sporting snowy toques, and delicate hoarfrost defying gravity.

新年快乐!Happy Year of the Tiger 🐯! For those who celebrate, I wish you prosperity and health ahead. 恭喜发财!
In Chinese culture, we celebrate by wearing and decorating with red: the colour of luck, gifting red envelopes of money to children, and of course feasting with family (scaled down for Covid, of course).
It's a special Year for me as my mom was born in the Year of the Tiger. She is literally a Tiger Mom but not actually a Tiger Mom (iykyk). A zodiac year comes around every twelve years so can you guess what big age she is turning?? (I know, she doesn't look it) 😍

I drive into this scene on the way to work every morning. It's such an iconic piece of Edmonton and I'm grateful to be able to experience it so routinely. Sometimes, I miss the rumble of vehicles crossing the steel frames of the old Walterdale, a jolt as powerful as any morning coffee!
If you're interested in grabbing one of these letter press holiday cards, I've made an edition for SNAP and have kept a few for myself if you wish to purchase directly from me. $5 each or mix and match with my other holiday cards for five for $20.

When I moved to Edmonton 14 years ago, I never would have dreamed that I would come to love this place. It may be a cold, icy city but it makes up for it in the warmth of its spirit.
I'll be trying this on the letterpress next weekend at where I will be volunteering at the 2021 Print Affair. This is a fundraiser (FUNdraiser, if you will) that helps sustain the operations of this vital community centre. Your ticket will allow you access to the current members' show and sell as well as the print shop and a chance to print some holiday cards of your own (not this one). If you're interested, I'll be putting a link in my bio and stories.

About a month late but here is the reduction linocut I made during a weekend workshop at with Brianna of . They just held the same workshop this weekend and will have another one in January if anyone is interested in trying it out!
