I attended a letterpress workshop this weekend at and we were asked to come up with an image to carve on lino and a corresponding quote so we could learn to set type.
I thought about this for a while and kept coming back to that feeling of community that I experienced a few weeks ago for my birthday. Growing up in a Chinese household meant that a lot of celebrations revolved around sharing meals and food was central to any expressions of love. Friends and family didn't just say hello to you, they wondered when you last ate. Inevitably, despite what answer was provided, more offerings of food would appear and any refusals would be met with vehement objection. And that's what I really missed during my last 3 Pandemic birthdays, that sense of eating together and sharing time together and getting to offer your love through food. So “你吃了吗” - have you eaten yet - is my hope that no matter where I am, what I am doing, I will never lose that sense of community.
