A woman knew her rights - and speaking up made a difference.

While sunbathing topless at a public beach in Saint John, New Brunswick, Lacey Tompkins was approached by a police officer and told to cover herself. She complied but later filed a complaint.

The Saint John Police Force has now apologized and acknowledged that there was no legal basis for the officer’s direction.

Women’s breasts are not inherently indecent, sexual or harmful to children. Yet nearly 30 years after Canadian courts affirmed women’s equal right to be topless in public, the double standard persists - not only in public attitudes, but sometimes among those responsible for enforcing the law.

This is why knowing our rights, challenging outdated assumptions and normalizing non-sexual nudity still matter.

A body does not become indecent simply because someone else is uncomfortable with it.

A week after the Federation of Canadian Naturists festival is a good time to reflect on membership. On top of providing a chance to gather with a number of fantastic people at the annual festival, there are a lot of perks to being part of the FCN. A number of clubs, including Bare Oaks Family Naturist Park, which hosted this year's festival, provide a discount to FCN members when they visit. Other groups, like our own, require a membership, but also welcome guests from recognized naturist groups like the FCN. There are also programs set up to save members money at a number of retailers. Additionally, the FCN provides members with quarterly magazines. FCN membership is also how Canadians gain membership in the International Naturist Federation.

There's a lot of value in an FCN membership, and it's nice to support those that support what we do. Have you joined?

Une semaine après le festival de la Federation of Canadian Naturists, c'est le moment idéal pour réfléchir à l'adhésion. Outre l'occasion de retrouver des personnes formidables lors du festival annuel, être membre de la FCN offre de nombreux avantages. Plusieurs clubs, dont Bare Oaks qui a accueilli l'édition de cette année, accordent une réduction aux membres de la FCN lors de leurs visites. When the camera is hidden in plain sight, what happens to consent? 👓📷

At Bare Oaks, photography is permitted only when everyone within range has given permission. Because smartphones made it difficult to know whether someone was taking pictures, we introduced bright camera-lens covers in 2019. But camera-equipped smart glasses present a new challenge. They can look much like ordinary glasses, making it difficult for others to know whether they are being recorded.

BanRay.eu is encouraging homes, workplaces, businesses and events to ban camera-equipped smart glasses altogether. Its message is simple: “Your face is not inventory.” https://banray.eu/en/

Privacy and consent matter everywhere,but they carry particular importance in naturist spaces. 🔒
