Actor Nathan Schmidt in his second year in the role of Matthew - also known as Levi - who acts as our narrator throughout this season's performance of the Badlands Passion Play at The Badlands Amphitheatre.

This version of the play is told through is eyes. Before following Jesus, he was a tax collector. That role made him an outsider in his own community — often judged, often avoided.

Nathan is an actor, theatre teaching artist, and musician based in Alberta. "Being a part of this play is such a remarkable experience in so many ways. It was such a wonderful community coming together, the stage and the audiences are a profound experience as a performer and the story is such a dynamic and personal exploration for all. It makes for an amazing place to get to be. And this year I will get to have my son along with me to share our first show together. I’m very excited for him."

It's the final weekend of the 2026 Badlands Passion Play at the The Badlands Amphitheatre. Actor Kelsey Krogman plays Mary Magdalene. It's a physically and emotionally demanding part.

In an interview with the Calgary Herald, Krogman said the script "has given space for the woman's perspective that is too often minimalized. Being ostracized gave Mary Magdalene such pain. She was longing for acceptance, inclusion and belonging which is what Jesus offered her. So many people today are hungry for inclusion, and are feeling the pain of separation, so we can empathize with Mary."

She added: "Even after Mary is rescued by Jesus, her struggles are not over. She still doesn't fit in with the women, and she can't be a disciple. She feels as if she is caught in the middle so, for her, the redemption Jesus offers is not an easy, magical fix. That also is a lesson people understand in their own lives."

Artistic Director Alyssa shares: "Kelsey has brought so much life to the role of Mary Magdalene over the past 5 years. Every time I watch her perform I notice something new."

Krogman adds: “I'm so excited to participate again this year with this amazing cast and crew! I get to portray an outsider who is rescued and restored into love, who knows both sorrow and deep joy. It's been beautiful to hear audience members share how they see their own story reflected in Mary Magdalene's journey.”
