Poking Holes in Greenwashing (2025)
"This larger-than-life canvas made entirely out of “eco-friendly” reusable shopping bags powerfully prompts reflections about consumer habits, convenience culture, and the illusion of environmentalism. Towering over the viewer, the piece punches holes in the assertion that corporations are decreasing their environmental impact by “eliminating” plastic shopping bags. While the current bags at the cash register may not crinkle or stretch the way they did before, make no mistake, these bags are still plastic. Dominating our cupboards, closets, and car trunks, these rebranded plastic bags represent the perpetual sale of the false promise to do better. Corporations continue to cash-out on evading accountability while consumers are baited into the traps of comfort and convenience.
Luce Latour-Mooney’s artistry showcases their personal ethos of resourcefulness, anti-capitalism, and ecological consciousness. Through the practice of bricolage, (art made with the limitation of materials that are readily accessible), Luce utilizes materials that are often the bi-products of modern society. Worn out clothing, curbside furniture, broken electronics, or other “garbage” often serve as the medium for their work. Luce's artistry actively resists materialistic and hegemonic forces through their uninhibited experimentation and hope for the future."
