Mech Babies - Benjamin Dunstan.

In the shadow of the future city’s gleaming spires, where neon-lit towers pulse with artificial life, the fringe encampments sprawl amid sickly woods and barren hills. Here, children are born with organic cybernetic parts—flesh fused with circuits, veins threaded with nanowires—a miracle of evolution or a curse of a polluted world. Yet, the cost is grim: mothers rarely survive the birth, their bodies unable to withstand the strain of delivering such hybrid offspring. In one such encampment, a brother and his older sister, both bearing the faint hum of cybernetic enhancements beneath their skin, watch their community wither under a mysterious illness that corrodes both flesh and circuitry. Driven by desperation, they abandon the decaying fringe, navigating treacherous hills under a smog-choked sky, determined to infiltrate the city’s fortified gates. Rumors speak of a hidden cure within its walls—a technology or medicine that could save their people—but the city guards its secrets jealously, and the siblings’ journey promises peril and revelation in a world where humanity and machine are no longer distinct.
