Artist Jessica Leigh Painting the beauty of Newfoundland. Newfoundland, Canada

A trip to Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve means dramatic cliffs, thousands of northern gannets, common murres, black-legged kittiwakes and views that make it impossible not to stop and take it all in for a while.

These are the moments that quietly shape the work created later in the studio.

Icebergs have a way of making everything feel still. There's something about the scale, the colour, and the quiet that stays with you long after you've seen one.

This original oil painting is inspired by Newfoundland's coastline and the unforgettable experience of seeing icebergs drift through the Atlantic.

My goal is always to paint more than what I see. I want to capture what it feels like to stand in a place.

At Cape Spear, the easternmost point in North America, that feeling comes from both the power of the waves and the endless Atlantic beyond them. Looking out across the horizon, it's impossible not to be reminded of just how vast the ocean really is.

One thing I've always liked about Newfoundland is that the weather doesn't have to be nice to be beautiful.

Fog, drizzle, salt spray, and waves crashing against the rocks.

It's hard to walk past a scene like this without stopping for a while.

A look at the progress on a new oil painting inspired by the rugged coastline along Newfoundland's East Coast Trail.

Most people see a wave.

I see a moment that exists for less than a second.

The ocean gathers itself, rises, collides with rock, and disappears before you can fully take it in.

Swipe through to see a small section of the painting emerge layer by layer.

Loving how the movement is starting to come through.

Progress from day one to today.

This iceberg painting has been all about patience, subtle colour shifts, and finding the right balance.

It's still a work in progress but I'm really enjoying how this oil painting is evolving.
