Pearl Ellis Gallery The Pearl Ellis Gallery is a non-profit society dedicated to the arts in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. The Gallery is run entirely by volunteers.

In 1977, a small group of volunteers dedicated to the arts, organized and registered the Comox Arts Society and opened a one-room viewing gallery in Comox. The Gallery was originally funded by a small government grant but, from 1980 to 2006, survived on revenue from commissions, donations, memberships, fundraisers and in-kind support from the town of Comox. From 2007 to present day, the Gallery ha

s received a Grant-in-aide from the CVRD. In 1980, the name was changed to The Filberg Gallery Association and in 2005, the Gallery was renamed after one of its founders, Pearl Ellis, as it is known today. Pearl Ellis was not an artist herself, but felt it was important for the people of the Comox Valley to have a place to see and display their art. The main objective of the organization has always been to establish and maintain an arts centre to encourage interest in, and study of, the arts and to provide a location where local talent can be exhibited. Many student groups in the Comox Valley hold their annual shows at the Gallery and, for many budding artists, this is their first opportunity to have their work on public view. More seasoned local artists choose the Gallery because it is an excellent place to have a solo or small group show in their home community. They do everything including greeting the public, processing art sales, hanging and promoting shows and all the other behind-the-scenes administrative work necessary to run a successful non-profit enterprise. These tireless volunteers deserve our sincere gratitude.

Artist Jill Paris Rody shares a striking triptych along with a few words for the current 'Abundance' show on display until September 12th.

"[I] enjoy painting Landscapes, Florals and Portraits, and this month [i'm] happy to share poppy-portraits grown by a local friend. These three 6"x8" paintings form a triptych which can be arranged and rearranged as the mood strikes you.
I never tire of seeing and painting the glorious Reds and Oranges of the perennial poppies, and these are the largest I've ever seen! (The paintings depict them at Life-Size!)"

It’s the last few days of our Members’ Showcase, Abundance.

Abundance explores richness in its many forms—through experience, imagination, connection, growth, and the creative process. Through the diverse perspectives and expressions of participating artists, visitors are offered new ways of considering what abundance might mean in their own lives.

Artist Kathi Rudko is featured here, holding her grandly scaled and aptly named piece "Fragmented Harvest: Peppers and Pears". It is on display at the current show 'Abundance', which is running until September 12th.

"I believe “Abundance” means ‘generous or plentiful giving,’ and this piece celebrates the abundance of the garden.

Having painted the flowers and vegetables from my garden and those of friends many times, I decided to do a mixed media piece (rather than traditional oil or acrylic) for this large canvas. After painting a playful underpainting, the curvaceous shapes of pears and a variety of pepper shapes began to appear. I started using various mark-making tools and adding collage papers to add subtle shapes and texture. As it went along, the negative spaces became as important as the positive. I realized it was definitely moving in a cubist manner, which I loved!

My artwork has been described as eclectic; I have painted in most paint media and in many genres over the last 30 years, and now teach adult art. I get immense pleasure from both teaching and creating fine art."

Artist Isabelle Durand, featured in the first image shares her thoughts on her two pieces 'Underwater Affluence' and 'Flowerworks' created for the show 'Abundance', currently on display until September 12th:

"For me, these two pieces represent the theme of this show.

Abundance at the seaside and all the "treasures" that it presents, not necessarily obvious to the eye, but always in abundance! The seaside landscape allowed me to experiment with the use of Alcohol Ink on styrofoam giving me a chance to carve into the material and work for more hidden designs.

The Flower piece on canvas reminds me of an explosion of flowers, similar to fireworks. It is always fascinating to use air blower techniques and alcohol ink on canvas."

Our very own Glenn Gustafson, who has helped spearhead the 'Spotlight on Craft' area at the Pearl Ellis Gallery, will be hosting an eco-print workshop on Sunday, September 27th at McLoughlin Gardens!

Join naturalist Glenn on a hike through the forest and gardens at McLoughlin Gardens to learn more about the trees, shrubs and plants growing on site, then use leaves collected on the hike to eco-print beautiful images onto paper. This particular process takes several weeks to ‘develop’, so finished samples will be available for pick-up when ready at the Pearl Ellis Gallery.

The cost is $10 + GST ($10.50) for materials which can be sent by e-transfer to [email protected] or by cheque to McLoughlin Gardens.

Artist Marylin Peeters offers her musings on her piece 'Where the Day Rests', currently on display for the 'Abundance' show on until September 12th.

"I've always been drawn to those quiet moments when the day slows down, the light softens, the ocean becomes still, and the ordinary feels extraordinary. In this painting, I wanted to bring together realism and contemporary design, allowing delicate botanical line work to emerge from the bouquet like memories drifting into the evening light. My hope is that this piece invites you to pause, breathe, and enjoy a moment of peace."

Thank you to those who came to the two fantastic workshops yesterday at the Lions Club (below the Pearl Ellis Gallery). They were well received, with creatives of all ages coming together to make something special in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Marg McLellan hosted the felting event and Nate Schmold (Nate👻Schmold) hosted the audible art event - a special thanks to them both! Along with special guest Scott Bertram who helped echo the creative vibes in the evening.

Audible Art is a monthly music and art event open to all, with the next one happening on September 26th - add it to your calendar and don't miss it!

Artist Roberto Binda is pictured beaming alongside his vibrant, richly textured piece 'Big Bloom', featured in the current Abundance exhibition, on display until September 12th. Here, he shares a little insight into the inspiration behind his work and what the word “Abundance” means to him:

"In the flowering world, giant sunflowers stand as a powerful symbol of abundance and growth. They transform sunlight into towering blooms, vibrant beauty, and countless seeds - each one carrying the promise of new life in seasons to come.

Art inspires life - this season, that new life has come in the form of giant sunflowers growing for the first time in our local garden."
