Route 22 proudly presents our next SOLO Exhibition in our downtown Cochrane Gallery location.

“Landscapes of Alberta” – Art Exhibition featuring the art of landscape painter JP Forget.

This exhibition is showing from June 23 - July 19, 2026.

“I find it a captivating challenge, to take a blank canvas or panel, and create a painting which will tell a story, depict the intricacies of a scene, expose a message, and generate an emotional response from the viewer. This is my mission when I paint: to communicate a message about the world we live in.”

On the easel: a scene from a fast water section of the Oldman River, upstream from Alberta Highway 22.
Expect the sun to light up the rocky escarpment on the left third of the mid-ground, and a lot of movement in the water at the forefront.
I have sweet memories of friends and I fishing this section of river, and netting cutthroat, bull trout, and white fish.

More varnishing today. Varnishing is an important stage in completion and preservation of an oil painting. Varnish enhances color, unifies sheen, and protects. The absence of varnish, or the presence of a thin or degraded layer, can allow dirt to embed directly into the paint film. This makes future cleaning much more complicated and increases the risk of damage to the paint surface. I like to apply a 2-step varnishing process. Step 1 is the application of a isolating varnish. This varnish contains a UV ray block and is never to be removed, protecting the painting from any damage from the sun and other removers. Step 2 is a hard varnish which allows for scrubbing and cleaning of the surface. This varnish is removable, years later when it begins to yellow, and replaced with a fresh layer.

The Fallen Timber Creek runs from the foothills of Central Alberta and joins the Red Deer River near Sundre.
Along the creek, about a kilometre upstream from the confluence, one finds evidence of a long ago crossing known as the Kettle Crossing.
This scene is just down stream from the crossing, looking southwest.
