Waiting for the kiln to cool today - always new surprises to intrigue. Here are a few yummy little cups from the last firing. Once I learned the “secrets” to making them pop off the pedestals with just one tap, life in the studio got easier! No more grinding or torching 🥂

Which do you prefer - before (left) or after (right)?
Have you ever heard of “Strike Fired” Pottery? I often use this additional low temperature firing technique, done after the pots have been glazed fired and the crystals are already grown. I’ve found that it can pop the colours and enhance the depth of the crystals in several of the formulations I have created.
Well I was asked to submit an article on Strike Firing for a new book called “Exploring Crystalline Glazes” by Diane Creber and here are my before/after pics that accompany the published description of this process. I also have an Artist’s feature, along with other Potter friends who specialize in these complex crystal glazes. The book will be out soon in Canada and the USA. and I’m excited to get my copy! Pic in comments to pre-order now.
(My weekend workshops cover this and other unique post fire techniques used in my Studio practice.)

Learn more about Crystalline glazes here in this interesting and well written article by Glenn L. Woods Jr. (multi- talented guy!) Glenn included a photo of one of my pieces and mention in this write up commissioned by the Museum of Ceramic Arts of New York.
Past participants in my workshops might find some interesting new information here - others might just find it a fascinating read. 😃
Congrats to Glenn on a job well done.

What are crystalline glazes? A very simple definition would suggest that any glaze that creates crystalline structures as a result of a slow cooling cycle can be classified as a crystalline glaze. The fuller truth, however, is that there are many categories of crystalline glazes: silky matte, microc...
