Five years ago, on June 11, 2021, the Chester Playhouse caught fire, while nearing the end of a significant renovation. Thanks to the hard work of 18 fire departments from across the province that leapt into action, no one was hurt, and damage was contained almost exclusively to the Playhouse building.
In the years that followed, a team of dedicated volunteers helped rebuild the theatre, while we presented shows in a “Playhouse Without Walls” at venues across our municipality, including frequent performances at the Chester Legion RCL #44.
Thanks to our patrons, donors, and supporters who carried us through those years, the Playhouse re-opened on August 26, 2023. Today, the Playhouse presents over 110 events per year, and has welcomed an average of 10,000 patrons per year for the last 2 years. We were nominated for the Live Sector Award at Music Nova Scotia awards in 2025, and Venue of the Year at the 2026 East Coast Music Awards. Most importantly, we continue to work hard to present a diverse mix of joyful, moving, and transformative performances with something for everyone to enjoy.
We remain so grateful to the community that we serve, for supporting us through challenging times, and continuing to support today. We believe that what happens here matters, and we know that our community believes that, too.
