It is with a saddened heart that I share that my beloved father passed away today ๐Ÿ’”

Because of this loss, all events and activities at Philippaโ€™s Herb Garden and Ma Petite Boutique are cancelled until Sunday, August 23.

This means:

๐Ÿ’ Brighten up Someoneโ€™s Day with a Beautiful Bouquet โ€” cancelled this week
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Ma Petite Boutique โ€” closed this week and next week
๐ŸŒธ Fresh Flower Purse Workshops โ€” cancelled this Saturday
๐ŸŒฟ Open Food Forage Garden Day โ€” cancelled this Sunday
๐Ÿงบ Fresh Flower Basket Workshops โ€” cancelled next Wednesday
๐ŸŽ Apple Cider Vinegar Workshop โ€” cancelled Saturday, August 22

All participants who were registered for the activities have been notified.

When I am ready to return, I hope to reschedule some of these events and activities for new dates.

I am truly sorry for any inconvenience these cancellations may cause, and I hope you will understand that I need this time with my family to grieve, remember, and say goodbye โค๏ธ

For now, I simply need to step away from the garden and the business for a little while.

Please hold your loved ones a little tighter tonight. Tell them you love them. Life can change in a heartbeat ๐Ÿ’•๐ŸŒฟ

Thank you for your understanding, kindness, and support during this difficult time.

Have a gentle evening โค๏ธ

Who am I? โ€“ Part 3 ๐ŸŒฟ

(See previous Tuesdays for part 1 & 2)

When I resigned from my job in 2014 and started creating the garden, I thought I was beginning a whole new chapter.

I was.

What I didn't know was that my body had already started writing a very different story.

For years, I had been experiencing strange symptoms that didn't seem to make much sense.

Sometimes it felt as if my feet would fall apart into tiny metal pieces.
At other times, I had a sharp pain in the side of my neck that felt as though someone had struck me with a metal sword.
I had cramps in my feet, restless legs, problems with my balance, occasional blurry vision in one eye, and a strange pulling sensation in my head, to name a few.

Every cold seemed to linger for seven or eight weeks, and I was tired... all... the... time.

The hardest part wasn't always the physical symptoms.
After spending time with peopleโ€”even people I enjoyed being withโ€”my brain simply couldn't process everything. It would take me days to recover.
Looking back, there had been little hints for years.
While still living in the Netherlands, I had been bitten by a tick. Whether that was the cause, I'll probably never know. It may even have been a spider bite years later here in Canada (in 2009 or 2010, I can't remember, but the weird symptoms started approximately in 2011.)

Then, in 2010, I had a very strong feeling that simply said:
"From now on, you really have to take good care of yourself."
It wasn't a thought I could ignore.
So I joined a gym and started training.

Years later, after repeatedly coming across stories brought to me about Lyme disease (life gives hints) and recognizing some of the symptoms, I finally asked my doctor to test me.

In August 2016, the results came back.
It was Lyme disease.
Finally, there was an explanation.
I took antibiotics, and thankfully many of the symptoms disappeared.
But the exhaustion remained.
I started reading everything I could find about Lyme disease.
To be honest...
Most of what I read wasn't very encouraging.
Yet, deep down, something kept telling me not to give up.

Sometimes life takes us down roads we never would have chosen ourselves.
Looking back now, I can see that this difficult season also taught me patience, perseverance, and to listen more carefully to my own body.

I didn't know it yet, but some of the biggest lessonsโ€”and the biggest changesโ€”were still ahead.

To be continued... ๐Ÿ’š

(The photo was, I believe, taken in 2014.)

Good morning on this warm Friday morning! ๐Ÿ”†

๐Ÿก Just a friendly reminder that Ma Petite Boutique is open this afternoon from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Don't forget to pick up your set of herbal balms while you're here! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ’š

This morning, as I was making my usual round through the garden, I was reminded once again how much beauty nature shares with us every single day.

๐Ÿ€ I checked on our Monarch caterpillars... we now have three large ones! It won't be long before they transform into their chrysalis and begin the incredible journey to become beautiful butterflies ๐Ÿฆ‹

๐Ÿซ I harvested fresh blueberries and raspberries.

๐Ÿšœ I opened up the Papa Barn to gather the tools for the day's work.

And then... a special little surprise ๐Ÿ’•

A hummingbird was happily sipping nectar from the dahlias. I couldn't tell if it was a male or female because it stayed just far enough away, but what a wonderful sight!

Sorry the photos aren't of better qualityโ€”they were taken from a distance with my phone ๐Ÿ“ธ. But they're real moments from this morning, and sometimes those are the most special ones.

There is always something new to discover and enjoy in our garden. ๐ŸŒธ

I'd love to share it with you!

๐ŸŒฟ Join me for a guided garden tour or unleash your creativity during one of my unique floral decoration workshops.

And how was your day going in these high temperatures? ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

I managed to get some gardening done this morning, but eventually it became too hot to stay out in the sun ๐Ÿฅต

๐Ÿ€ So, I decided to make another wreath as an example for this Saturday's workshop.
I worked on the porch of the Papa Barn, enjoying the shade, a lovely breeze, and a beautiful view of the seasonal garden. It was the perfect place to create ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒž If spending the afternoon on a hot beach doesn't sound appealing, why not join me on this upcoming Saturday, August 8, at 2:00 pm and create your own beautiful wreath?

We'll begin by wandering through the garden to gather fresh flowers, grasses, seed heads, and other botanical treasures.
Once we start creating, I'll cut more plant material as needed. This wreath is made with approximately 20 different kinds of plants, making each one truly unique.

You can even customize it with a bow in the colour of your choice ๐ŸŽ€

๐ŸŒฟ Workshop time: Approximately 2 hours
๐Ÿ’š Cost: $75.00 per person
๐Ÿ‘ฅ Maximum of 6 participants

Please DM me to reserve your spot. Registration is confirmed with an e-transfer.

Good morning on this beautiful day! โ˜€๏ธ

I hope you have a wonderful day.

I feel very fortunate that I get to work in the garden every day, and even more fortunate that the medicinal plants do what they were created to do. It is truly a privilege to work with them. ๐Ÿ’š

I recently discovered that my Calendula balm helped get rid of a corn on my foot. That saved me a visit to the foot nurseโ€”and quite a few dollars too! ๐Ÿ˜„

Before I forget... This month only, my Calendula, St. John's Wort, Plantain, and Comfrey balms are on sale for just $29.50 for all four.

They are wonderful to have on hand for cuts, bruises, sore muscles, dry skin, hands, and lips. ๐Ÿ‘„ A perfect time to stock up before the colder months arrive ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nature never stops amazing me.

Or... sometimes it does the complete opposite! ๐Ÿ˜‚

This year, it almost feels as if parts of the garden have come to a standstill. Many of the seeds I sowed never came up. Some annual climbers decided they would rather bloom than climb, while others happily climb but refuse to flower.

Even my squash plants should have long vines by now... but not this year!

The Mullein plants, howeverโ€”the ones nature planted for meโ€”are thriving, just like many of the other "weeds" that decided to make themselves at home. Some are more than welcome, especially Mullein.

One of mine is now over 6ยฝ feet (about 2 metres) tall! I recently learned in a documentary that a single Mullein plant can produce up to 200,000 seeds. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Looks like I'll have plenty more Mullein in the years to come... and that's not a bad thing, because it also has wonderful medicinal properties.

No matter what, we keep going.

The garden continues to provide plenty to harvest for our meals, beautiful flowers and seed heads for botanical creations, and countless little moments of joy every single day ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ‘€ Keep an eye on this page for upcoming workshops, or check the Events section.

๐Ÿซด๐Ÿผ See a workshop date but prefer making something different? Just ask! If I have the materials, we can often make it happen.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿฆฐ Private workshops are also available for groups of 4 or more.

๐Ÿ’š Book a guided or self-guided garden tour.

๐Ÿก Ma Petite Boutique is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 1:00โ€“5:00 pm, or by appointment, if you'd like to pick up your herbal balms or browse the shop.

Did the day ever start off exciting... ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿ’š

I found two big Monarch caterpillars! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Every single day I've been checking the milkweed for eggs and caterpillars, but until this morning... nothing. They are incredibly good at hiding!

Finding them always feels like a little gift from nature. It reminds me that sometimes wonderful things are happening, even when we can't see them yet ๐Ÿ’š

If you would like to see these beautiful Monarch caterpillars too, book a guided garden tour or join me for a workshop this Saturday, August 8.
With a little luck, you'll get to meet these amazing little creatures in person!

Originally, I had planned an Artisan Fire Starter Workshop, but if that isn't your thing, you can choose to create a beautiful, full, thick wreath like the one in the photo instead.

I made this wreath a year ago, and I still have it. It has become one of my absolute favourites ๐Ÿ’•

Mine is filled with goldenrod and oregano, but you'll have so many beautiful materials to choose from, including:
๐ŸŒฟ Anise hyssop
๐ŸŒฟ Wild bee balm
๐ŸŒฟ Cornflowers
๐ŸŒฟ Lavender
๐ŸŒฟ Grasses
๐ŸŒฟ And so much more!

Most of the materials will be used fresh, and you'll use plenty of them to create a lush, natural masterpiece.

Creating with nature is not only funโ€”it is also wonderfully calming and nourishing for the soul and the mind ๐ŸŒฟโœจ
