te strangers to stop and stare. And we work our butts off, pouring our hearts and souls into each and every wedding that we shoot, to do so! Our adventures in wedding photography actually began on a mountain summit during our very first date. That’s when we discovered our mutual passion for adventure and each other. That’s where our fascination with light and love was born. And that’s when we started dreaming up new and exciting ways to see the world (and tell our stories) through our cameras. That fascination led us through some of the most spectacular places on earth, where we learned and honed our skills documenting light and adventure. This background is paramount to the wedding photography team that we’ve become. It’s shaped our entire approach and philosophy, which is rooted in photojournalism, storytelling, and natural beauty. With ambitious imagination, we set out to artfully capture the authentic story of your day as it unfolds, unassumingly from the shadows. This allows you to truly experience the natural magic of your day, while we focus on capturing real, authentic behaviour and genuine emotion. While creating “epic portraits” (really cool photos of the two of you alone), we take a much more active role in directing and creating our own magic. We’ll worry about the light, composition, exposure, and everything else… all you have to do is have fun and enjoy each other. All the while, we’ll be doing what we strive to do best – seeking out authentic moments, beautiful light, and raw emotion… and mixing them all together magically within your photos. At the heart of our art, is an insatiable love for life, each other and our two adorable little Manns – Madelyn and Timmy. If you’ve taken any of our workshops, you’ve probably heard us (repeatedly) talk about the magic of backlight against a dark background.

This is a perfect example.

See how the backlight on the kids lifts them cleanly off that shaded mountain behind them. In big-world / small-subject scenes like this, it’s easy for people to disappear into the landscape.

The key is contrast. Learning to see where it already exists… and then being patient enough to wait for your subject to land right in it.

Exposed for the highlights reflected in the lake.

Composed so the lake is the only highlight in the frame.

The hardest part was lining up Aiden’s profile within the highlights on the water, in a gap free of intersecting branches. That meant first seeing the light, then seeing the possibility of a silhouette moving through it, then getting settings locked in, then waiting for the right moments as the kids ran by on the path. Then shooting the s**t out of it.

Erika shot about 40–50 frames of four different kids walking/running the path before everything finally lined up for this one.

The second photo shows the subject in pretty much the exact same location, just from a different angle (we’ve marked where Erika was standing for the first frame).

It’s so funny. I have barely any photos of myself. And I am totally okay with that. I pursue photography not for the actual end products, but because it helps me live a more creative life. The photos are a little bonus, but definitely not the impetus.

This is one of the few photos Lanny has taken of me and Timmy. I wonder what kind of mother will Timmy remember me as, with only photos like this? LOL
