Thank you to the staff and council at the Town of Canmore for your efforts to reduce the wildfire risks in the Bow Valley, and to FireSmartPeaks for helping us all get a little more momentum. Kudos to Canmore Council and the Town of Canmore for some significant wildfire mitigation measures approved today:
✅New 2025 Capital Projects for the Canmore Nordic Centre East and West Phase 2 Fireguard Construction Project.
✅Incorporation of FireSmart principles into the Town's Engineering Design and Construction Guidelines, including avoiding use on public land of new coniferous trees and shrubs and organic mulch which are all highly combustible.
✅A one-off Community Wildfire Risk Reduction Roof Replacement Incentive Program for residents who've had FireSmart Home Assessment which has recommended upgrading their roof to a FireSmart approved material.
✅A revised Capital Project to help protect the Town's water supply from wildfire by replacing roofing material and wood siding at three lift stations and one pumphouse with FireSmart approved materials.
These are important actions that come on the heels of Council's earlier decision to apply for funding for a Regional FireSmart Coordinator.
But we still need to see more urgency and progress in implementing the 2024 Climate Emergency Action Plan's recommendation that the Town of Canmore develop programs and incentives (beyond the one-off roof replacement incentive) for property owners - and residents - to implement FireSmarting. This is essential for reducing the risk of ember ignitions that can lead to urban conflagrations.
