“Why do artists do it?” asks painter Russell Jewel. “Why do we bare our souls to the public and risk one person’s opinion?”

His words capture the tension every artist feels when entering a juried event — the balance between vulnerability and ambition.

But what makes a painting rise above the rest? What qualities make a viewer stop, linger, and fall in love? We turned to some of the art world’s most experienced judges, collectors, and curators to find out.

Learn to Paint with Stephen Purdy!

Most of us enjoy the natural landscape, and sometimes stand in awe of its beauty.
Join Stephen as he teaches and shares what he’s learned to help you make a landscape painting you can be proud of!

This class is based on the process of painting outdoors, in which it is essential to develop a strong composition, designate the appropriate values, and make the colour sparkle with the life of the scene before your eyes. Outside, you have a limited time to capture the scene as the light will change. Inside the studio, this same efficiency will keep your painting fresh.

This class is for everyone. Beginner, Intermediate or Expert. We can all learn from some constructive criticism. The class is structured with demonstrations of each stage of a painting, followed by individual critiques of each stage of the students’ progress. If you are a little uncertain of your ability, don’t be, this class might be a little intense, but that is because painting is really, really, REALLY fun!!!

We are so excited to partner with Unleash Press and share this call for submissions of land-based writings, which will be made into plaques and installed along LAC trails in the spring.

"Words To Wander To: Your Writing At Leighton Art Centre" is open to all genres of land-based writing, including poems, stories, and creative nonfiction under 300 words. All submissions must respond to nature in some way. The intention is to encourage visitors to explore their natural surroundings and to create engagement with the art and words they encounter while there.

The top 5 entries will be selected by Unleash Press’ Executive Director Jen Knox and Editorial Director Ashley Holloway in conjunction with LAC staff. The selected entries will then be converted to small, weather resistant wooden plaques that will be placed on posts throughout the walking paths on the Leighton Art Centre property. Author sites and works will be promoted through a QR code or link.

The completed project will be unveiled at our Clothesline Art Market in June. Submissions are now open on Unleash Press' website: https://shorturl.at/ugukX or check out the link in our Linktree. NOTE: Submissions are subject to a nominal fee of $3.00 USD to cover contest costs.
