On "folk music"
Since the announcement of Killer Mike's appearance at this year's festival, we've had a few folks question what the true meaning of "folk" is. How do you define the genre, the festival, the music?
In our eyes, folk is for the people, by the people. Folk music is often created by nimble, eager minds hoping to drive home their own cultural roots - whether that is modernized or otherwise. We take great pride in broadening the horizons of "folk" and the folkies that attend. We take even greater pride in the diverse artistry that share their beautiful music on our stages. You can enjoy traditional folk and world music, to reggae, punk, funk, classical, contemporary, pop, indie, rock, roots, hip-hop, rap... We even have a dedicated family zone and stage with children's entertainers and a Talk Tent where storytellers and cyphers meet as one.
Folk music is also a revolution made through song. Throughout history, across cultures, "folk" stories have shared the trials and triumph of human existence. It's often through heartache, defiance, loss, love, and so, so much more that brings us together. We need more songs that call out our differences and call in what makes us unique as a human race. Maybe it is music that defines our generations, through "folk" stories.
We've thought long and hard about what it means to be "folk", and we are proud of what we've accomplished and look forward to a future of redefined Calgary Folk Music Festival history. This year, as always, there truly is something for everyone and we can't wait for another folkin' good year with you. 💛
