Dynos for beginners— Part 2

Following up on our video from last week, which explored how to use momentum, today's video shows you what to do once all four points of contact leave the wall.

A lot of climbers try to catch a dyno too early or too late.

The sweet spot is right at the apex — the moment where you become weightless.

Just like tossing a ball in the air, the easiest moment to catch it is at the very top, when it briefly “floats” before falling back down.

Dynos work the same way.

Time your catch for the apex and you'll start sticking those dynos.

Here we observe Paul in his natural habitat.

Perched delicately upon the rock face, brush in hand, he performs the ancient and sacred ritual of crag maintenance.

With remarkable dedication, the elusive Paul clears away moss, lichen, and decades of dirt build-up. Ensuring the rock remains climbable for future generations.

A rare and notable creature indeed.

Climbing doesn't always have to be slow and controlled—sometimes it's best to let momentum do the work for you

One of the most common mistakes we see in beginner climbers is to lock-off and reach for the next hold. This is really taxing on the forearms and creates that pumped, tight, weak feeling in the forearms.

Do this over and over in a climbing session and you're going to pump out and head home without completing your project.

Using momentum in these circumstances uses less energy and therefore saves energy for the rest of the climb and the rest of your climbing session.

You can generate momentum by swinging or squatting and then launching on the upward swing.
Pro-tip: aim to catch the hold at your apex, when you're weightless (we'll be demonstrating this in next week's technique of the week so stay tuned)
