Social Group I have been a part of the Society for Creative Anachronism since 1993 (that's 32 years!). It's very new and in development.

I have had several personas including Niniane Grosbourne Glastonbury, Giacynta Francesca Maria Cocchetti and my current personna, Anastaszia Szabo, who is a 11th Century Hungarian noble woman. I teach several classes including Beginner Blackwork (ITHRA, Magistrae), 5 Stitches for the SCA, Eastern European Dolls, and A Survey of stamping, stenciling for the SCA. I have been honoured to be the Arts

& Sciences Champion for Ramsgaard and the Craftsman of the Mountain for Hartwood. I have held virtually all positions in Ramsgaard (with the exception of Marshall officers) including Seneschal, Exchequer, Chatelaine, Web Minister, Arts & Sciences Minister. I am using this group to provide insight into my crafting and SCA journey, as well connect with like-minded folks. We also do virtual conversations, crafting get togethers and learning sessions. This past week has been a whirlwind of meetings and "stuff". And yesterday morning before work, I slipped a rib in my back, which means a chiro and a lot of quiet in the evening. So, I managed to get a full evening of sitting listening to Hartwood's Bardic evening and embroidering on my coat... probably means that I missed doing something else...

Last week, I purchased a one year subscription to Jane Stafford's School of Weaving. I watched all of the first season, and then built my first warp for my new-to-me 4 shaft floor loom so i could practice.

We also mounted two screws into the wall that will hide behind a picture on the wall in the living room for my warp board when I need to use it.

I also splurged and bought a Lazy Kate. It should be here next week.

Then this weekend turned into a tough family weekend, as we lost a family member.

Today, my DH suggested that I make today a "weaving day" because he knows how much it means to me to get started on my first project and it would be a good distractionafter this weekend. He had plans for a few projects for himself as well.

After uncovering the loom, and beginning to sort everything out, I realized I have no lease sticks for this loom, and the back apron lash point is a very bent metal piece.

Some discussion was had, we decided that a trip to Home Depot was in order, to purchase a few things.

We bought dowelling so that DH could create a piece for me to fill bobbins using my electric drill (dowel, o-rings and a tip cover) and he will make me 2 of these. We also bought enough hemlock trim to make two lease sticks and a new wooden back beam tie-on piece.

Finally, we also bought enough materials so that he can build me a bridge between the two castles so that I have somewhere to clamp my rattle and weaving light as needed.

So, no weaving today, but plans for some great upgrades of my loom to come in the near future.

Pretty warp, your time is coming soon...

Greetings Hartwood!

I write to you today, not as the Seneschal of this amazing Shire, but as your Craftsman Defender. Yule is rapidly approaching and it is time to let those who would vie for the Craftsman Defender title, know what the competition will entail.

Throughout my SCA career, I have come to follow an adage. "Plan the work; Work the plan". To this end here is the matrix for this year.

1) Show us the historical inspiration for your piece. This could be a group of pieces, or a single piece. Bonus marks for information on where you got your inspiration, what about it inspired you, whether your intent was to recreate or use some part of it to inspire your own work. Help us get to know why this was your inspiration piece/grouping.

2) Show us the plan. How did you plan out your work? What helped you design the piece? Sketches, fabric samples, design samples, pieces that you did to try out some technique you needed to understand before you did the work, show us how it came to be designed.

3) Show us the finished project. How did it work out? How does it compare to your inspiration and plan? What worked? What didn't?

This competition is not just about the finished piece. Show us how, as a craftsman, you go from ideas and inspiration to completed piece, and the journey to get there.

I look forward to seeing your entries!

Yours in Service,

HL Anastasia Szabo, Hartwood Craftsman Defender - 2024
