Fall Movie Nights | Hocus Pocus (1993) ✨

Gather your favourite witches, ghosts and Halloween lovers for a special screening of the 1993 cult classic Hocus Pocus at The GRAND.

When Max Dennison accidentally resurrects the Sanderson Sisters on Halloween night, he and his little sister Dani must find a way to stop the three witches before they steal the lives of Salem’s children. Featuring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy at their spellbinding best, Hocus Pocus is the perfect Halloween classic: mischievous, nostalgic and just the right amount of spooky.

Come early for Uncle Fatih’s Pizza’s pizza and drinks (including a themed cocktail!) from 5:30PM, then settle in for a big-screen Halloween favourite at 7PM.

Costumes encouraged. Black cats optional. Magic inevitable.

Kinda sick of the city’s concrete walls? Yah, us too. That’s why we’ve designed our Lobby to feel like a retreat. Velvet couches, warm woods, dim lighting, retro wallpaper and space to breathe…

Being downtown for us, means being a post-work escape to grab a drink, grab a moment alone and steal some inspiration for the days ahead.

This is a very different caption than we wanted to be writing today. When we awoke to the news of Tim Curry having passed, we had just launched the screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show the afternoon prior. A film so spectacular, so ironic, so outrageous and so perfectly mad that it has remained a fever-dream for creatives to dip into for inspiration since the 70’s.

Tim’s skill, charisma and undeniable talent in this masterpiece deserves to live on forever, and we feel honoured to be able to share it once again with the Calgary community for a night of frivolity to celebrate his life.

We do hope you’ll join us, Oct 10.

Meet our GRAND Vendors: Uncle Fatih’s Pizza-Pie

Back in 2004, Fatih Ilcin opened a single by-the-slice pizza shop in Vancouver. More than 20 years later, that one neighbourhood shop has grown into a much-loved Canadian pizza company, with Calgary home to its only Alberta location.

Inspired by his Turkish roots, Fatih added his own signature touch: sesame seeds on the crust, a nod to the savoury pastries he grew up with. Pair that with fresh dough made daily, never-frozen ingredients and plenty of veggie goodness, and it’s easy to see why Uncle Fatih’s has built such a loyal following.

Now you can grab a slice right here at the GRAND before select movie nights including Practical Magic (Sept 11), Hocus Pocus (Oct 09) & The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Oct 10).

One iconic theatre. One iconic slice. Sounds like a pretty great night out.

Our History | Part I

When The GRAND Theatre was conceived, Calgary was home to just 50,000 people. Senator James Lougheed, a visionary businessman, recognized the need for an entertainment hub in this rapidly growing city and enlisted architect L. R. Wardrop to bring his vision to life.

Belle Lougheed, his wife, was an influential Indigenous academic, artist, and community builder who played a crucial role in the theatre’s creation. A high-status socialite and a passionate advocate for the arts, Belle’s support for visual and performing arts was vital to the success of The GRAND.

While James sought to establish a world-class performing arts center, it was Belle’s dedication and vision that truly helped shape the vibrant cultural hub we have today.

On February 5, 1912, The Theatre opened its doors, hailed as the largest theatre in the country. It was a true marvel of modernity, equipped with electric lighting, automatic sprinklers, and dressing rooms with hot and cold running water. The opening show, “The Passing of the Third Floor Back”, had previously enjoyed successful runs in London and New York, and featured a renowned English actor named Johnston Forbes-Robson.

More to come! Stay tuned 🎥

RSVP PEOPLE! LIMITED ENTRY | Thurs Sept 10 6-9pm

We’ve heard you: Calgary needs more affordable, accessible spaces for artists to rehearse, create and perform.

In partnership with Allied, the owner of the Lougheed, The GRAND is exploring how L-Block could help respond to that need, expanding access to space for Calgary’s creative community and creating new opportunities for artists and arts organizations.

On September 10, we’re opening the doors and inviting artists, makers, cultural organizations and the wider public to come inside, explore the building and picture what could happen here.

Throughout the evening, artists and makers will share work alongside food, music and opportunities to meet some of the people making and presenting work across Calgary.

An invitation to imagine what could happen here…
L-Block has rooms to fill, walls to work with and spaces that could accommodate all kinds of creative activity — from
rehearsals and performances to exhibitions, classes, workshops, installations and gatherings.

We’re inviting artists, dancers, theatre-makers, musicians, comedians, creative companies, dance and theatre schools, makers, collectives and other cultural organizations to come and see the space, meet one another and consider whether L-Block could become part of what they’re creating next.

You might come to see an exhibition, stay for something to eat or drink, discover a new artist, meet someone new in the creative community, or simply satisfy your curiosity about what’s inside the building.

You may also leave with an idea for something you’d like to make here…L-Block Open House is a first step in exploring what becomes possible when an underused space, a building owner and a community of artists come together.

We’d love you to come and see what might be possible.
