Calgary Young People’s Theatre (CYPT) was founded in 1992 by Brian Dorscht and Jackie Pontin. Since then CYPT has prided itself on providing numerous development opportunities to young people to explore the performing arts and develop their creativity and teamwork skills through camps, classes, workshops and production opportunities. CYPT produces a theatrical season made up of 4 productions, in w

hich youth ages 9-17 audition for the chance to be a part of a professional theatre process and performance. We offer a mentor-ship program within our productions, giving older students or recent alumni, a chance to shadow our production team to learn other theatrical skills including directing, stage management or design. We pride ourselves on the selection of plays we choose each year that challenge, inspire and entertain our young actors and audiences alike. Over the past few years we have aimed to engage members of the arts community by commissioning original works or adaptations by local playwrights for our season. We endeavor to offer our participants a well-rounded arts experience through collaboration with other community and arts groups.

Our Christmas show is something truly special this year. 🕯️

Written by the 2026 Outpatient Collective and directed by Kristin Eveleigh, on Christmas Eve, a cabin full of children welcome two unexpected and opposing groups of soldiers seeking refuge. For just one night, could the sounds of warfare fade to the background? Could a brief moment of respite invite us to lay down our arms and bask in the childlike wonder of the season?

Inspired by Truce in the Forest, an autobiographical short story by Fritz Vincken about a real Christmas he experienced as a child in World War 2.

Our fall show is HERE and she means business. 💄

Written by Cayley Wreggitt and directed by Abigail Weeks, Beth is determined to become popular, and she will do anything to get there — including lying, cheating, and betraying those closest to her. With her sister Em whispering in her ear, she navigates the social landscape of Cawdor High School, facing queen bees, theatre geeks and even witches, as she fights to have the ultimate high school experience.

Mean Girls meets Macbeth in this love letter to the high school rom coms of the early 2000s. Look out Shakespeare. 🗡️
