We wrapped up our time in Vancouver at Urban Native Youth Association’s first event in the park! We were so excited to be invited to take part and share some of the ways we explore Indigenous storytelling through theatre.

We brought along our puppet station and treats for young people who wanted to create their own puppet shows, our Story Labs with writing prompts, and examples of scripts we’ve developed with young people from different Nations. We also shared some of the traditional knowledge we’ve been learning to adapt into theatre activities.

Kathleen Starr resurrected Bae for a short performance on the pitch, and throughout the afternoon we got to sit back and enjoy some incredible performances from the other artists and community members gathered in the park.
We were also lucky to have Nova’s sister join us for part of the trip. An arts leader in her own right and the founder of IndigE Girl Comedy Fest, she helped our little travelling team get around Vancouver and joined us for some much-needed downtime.

After a very busy week, we spent our final day driving the Sea to Sky Highway and taking the Sea to Sky Gondola, getting a chance to unwind together and take in the incredible scenery around Squamish before heading home.
And with that, our summer travels are officially wrapped!
After a crazy summer of travelling, creating, teaching, learning and sharing with people from different Nations across Western Canada, our team needs some rest.

We’re looking forward to coming back rested and ready for another season of our free Indigenous theatre programming for young people, along with some massive organizational growth for OITY in the year ahead.

Miigwech to everyone who welcomed us, taught us, shared with us and made space for our work this summer. ❤️

A beautiful couple of days in Vancouver! 🩷

We spent two days at Progress Lab 1422 with the help of Rumble Theatre playing, sharing stories and exchanging knowledge with some incredible local Indigenous artists.

We got through SO much play with Marion Jacobs (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Snuneymuxw & Bahamian) and Quelemia Sparrow (Musqueam), and Kung Jaadee Kennedy (Haida, Musqueam, Squamish, Tlingit, Tsleil-Waututh & Hawaiian) joined us to share so many of her beautiful stories and teachings.

And a huge thank you to the kids who came and played with us! 🩷

Miigwech to Rumble Theatre and Progress Lab 1422 for giving us the space to gather, play, share and learn together.

Tomorrow we’re at UNYA’s Native Youth Block Party at Woodland Park from 1–3 PM! We’ll have a performance, our tent, games, and a space for kids to come play, make some theatre, or just chill with us.

Come find us! 🩷

Day 1 | Vancouver 🩷

In our practice, we get to break the ice with all types of kids, and today was no different. We had a great group who joined us for games, knowledge sharing, and lots of play.

One thing that stuck out was a game Dez brought into the space called “Yes, Let’s!”

It’s an introduction to improv: somebody calls out what we’re doing, everyone responds, “Yes, let’s!”, and then we mime it, commit to it, have fun and .... well, play.

As the game goes on, we give the kids room to take those ideas and let their imaginations soar.

“Let’s pretend we’re on a farm!”

“Yes, let’s!”

So there we were, seriously and diligently attending to our imaginary gardens and animals, when one of the kids announces:

“I’m a floating horse.”

And so we had a floating horse.

Dez kept the game moving and our horse kept floating, until finally:

“Somebody get that horse out of the sky!”

So one of the grown-ups reached up, brought our floating horse back down to earth, and the kid happily carried on as a horse on the ground while the rest of us kept farming. 😂🩷

☀️ Anishinaabe Theatre Exchange | Calgary, Day One

What a beautiful first day in Treaty 7!

Fifteen young people joined Oshkagoojin Indigenous Theatre for Youth at The Confluence for a day of movement, storytelling, puppetry and theatre-making.

We were grateful to be joined by Elder Bryan Little Chief, who shared teachings about respecting our bodies, the gifts Creator has given us, and the relationships between people, the animal nations, plants and all living things.

We carried those teachings into our theatre work, sharing our own Anishinaabe teaching of the Four Orders of Creation and inviting young people to explore the winged ones, swimmers, crawlers and four-legged through movement.

Throughout the day, we warmed up our voices and bodies, played, built stories, explored puppetry and created tableaux inspired by traditional teachings. Our older youth even got to take some of their work outside into the Calgary sunshine. ☀️

This is what we hoped this exchange could be: bringing Anishinaabe knowledge and theatre practices with us, learning from the people and teachings of Treaty 7, and creating space for young people to bring those connections to life through their own bodies, voices, stories and imaginations.

Miigwech to everyone who joined us. ❤️
