Every town and city has hidden potential in its walls, whether that be empty warehouses, community halls, or underused rehearsal rooms, spaces that could be utilized as a performance stage or studio if artists could find and access them.

That's exactly what Priority 4 of the Alberta Music Action Plan is tackling.

Priority 4: Explore under-utilized spaces

This priority looks at how Alberta's government can work with communities and venue operators to unlock existing spaces for music professionals, including:

• Reducing barriers that keep artists from accessing cost-efficient live performance and rehearsal spaces

• Creating a central directory of venues, complete with contact info, specs and booking details, so artists can more easily find, book and connect with promoters and venues

• Partnering with the National Music Centre (NMC) to expand access to its practice and performance spaces for Albertan artists

We look forward to discussing this priority and more at the upcoming Music Cities Convention.

Our sincere gratitude goes out to Marcin Swoboda (viola) and Donovan Seidle (violin) for their performance at Inglewood by Optima in Red Deer.

This visit was especially meaningful for Jean, a resident who used to teach piano lessons in Winnipeg. Jean taught her whole family piano, and her household was full of music—her husband played piano and organ, and her children played trumpet, trombone, flute, and drums.

Every time we visit, Jean shares that it “makes her day” to hear the music she worked in and taught for so many years.

Thank you, Marcin and Donovan, for bringing live classical performances directly to Jean and her fellow residents.

The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada will never endorse a trade agreement that threatens Canadian sovereignty. The AFM supports the Canadian government’s sensible decision to suspend trade negotiations with the United States.

Ensuring union members can safely and efficiently work across North America remains our top priority. We continue to pursue all available policy options that will benefit Canadian and American musicians alike.
