New on the Blog! The end of the Calgary Phil's 2025/2026 Season also marks the conclusion of Juliane Gallant's three-year term as the Orchestra's Resident Conductor. Over those three years, Gallant has led the Phil in sold-out concerts, worked with Canadian pop music icons, made debut performances with orchestras across Canada and beyond, and uncovered a love of Pops conducting. Juliane's final performance as Resident Conductor of your Calgary Phil will be this week at Broadway Hits: Hamilton, Rent + More!

Tonight we were treated to a sublime performance of Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto with conductor Earl Lee leading superstar soloist Steven Isserlis and the Orchestra. In making his Calgary debut this evening, Isserlis appeared as our final Naomi + John Lacey Virtuoso Program artist of the season. Highlights continued to flow following intermission: double bassist Matthew Heller received the Phil’s Musical Education Champion Award, and then Lee and the Orchestra returned to the stage for all the magnificence of Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony. A big thank you to the Hayes Family for their generosity as this weekend’s Concert Supporters. There are still a few tickets available for Saturday night — just head to CalgaryPhil.com.

These critiques did not age well! Gustav Mahler is widely regarded as one of the most important, ambitious, and emotionally intense composers in the orchestral repertoire, but that doesn’t mean his work was loved by all! Extensive revisions followed the initial premiere of his First symphony before it was embraced as the masterpiece we hear today.

This week, the Orchestra performs Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 with conductor Earl Lee at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. Join us and let us know what you think of this monumental work.

The Calgary Philharmonic is devastated by the news of Cris Derksen’s passing earlier this weekend. An astonishingly innovative composer and cellist, Cris served as the Calgary Phil’s Artistic Advisor since 2021. We know that Cris’ legacy will live on through their music, commitment to music education, championing of new works, and in establishing supports and opportunities for Indigenous artists. Our hearts are heavy and our thoughts are with her family, friends, and everyone who was impacted by Cris.
