This is a friendly reminder about the Scorpio Theatre AGM, which will be held at 8pm on Friday August 21st at the Scorpio Theatre rehearsal space at 331 – 41 Ave NE.

While some board members are standing for re-election, all Executive board positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary) are available for nomination and will be elected by a majority vote of attendees. To vote you must be a member in good standing of the Society. Everyone who volunteered in any capacity in a Scorpio production over the past season is eligible to vote, or you can join the Society by paying the nominal fee of $1 at the AGM.

Scorpio Theatre is also looking to find enthusiastic people to join the board in Member at Large positions to work in the following areas: social media, marketing, social events, and maintenance of the rehearsal space.

We are always looking for people who are enthusiastic about the future of Scorpio Theatre to serve on all board positions. They will help guide the organization’s continued growth, while helping to maintain our company mandate of producing exciting plays for Calgary audiences that are new works, or have never been produced in Calgary.

There will be a social with snacks and refreshments served courtesy of Scorpio Theatre following the completion of the meeting.

Scorpio Theatre is looking for volunteers for the construction and painting of the set for Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song, our first show of the upcoming season.

Experience working on basic construction and painting would be helpful but is not mandatory.

Tools not required.

Enthusiasm and a cheerful attitude are always welcome!

Construction will take place at the Front Row Centre Players rehearsal and workshop facility at 4619 6 St NE #1.

If you can help during any of the times listed below, even if it is only for part of a day, please contact us at [email protected] to let us know. The first day on the list is of great importance for us to get started on the build.

Scorpio Theatre is looking for Box Office Managers and Ushers for Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song, Oct 1 to 10 in the Joyce Doolittle Theatre!

We require one Box Office Manager and two Ushers for each performance. Ushers will get to see the show for free at the performance they are volunteering for. Box Office Managers have to stay in the box office for the duration of the show, but will be given a comp for any other performance of the run...

The auditions for Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song are complete, and what a wealth of talent came out to read for the available roles. Calgary has an incredibly deep pool of tremendous acting talent and you made our job of cast selection very hard indeed! Thank you to everyone who attended and we wish we could have cast all of you!

All but one of the cast, and many of the production team was at the first read through last night and we captured a few pictures of the event!

This script is truly spectacular and this cast was already bring us to a halt with laughs and deeply emotional scenes. Just wait until they really sink their teeth into this one!

Torch Song runs for 11 performances from October 1 to 10, 2026 in the Pumphouse Theatre's Joyce Doolittle Theatre.

First up is...

Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song

October 1-10, 2026 at the Pumphouse - Joyce Doolittle Theatre

In Torch Song – the two-act revival of Harvey Fierstein’s award-winning Torch Song Trilogy – the life of Arnold Beckoff, a torch song-singing, Jewish drag queen living in New York City, is dramatized over the span of the late 1970s and 1980s. Told with a likable, human voice, Torch Song follows Arnold’s odyssey to find happiness in New York. All he wants is a husband, a child, and a pair of bunny slippers that fit, but a visit from his overbearing mother reminds him that he needs one thing more: respect.

A gender-bending, patriarchy-smashing, hilarious new take on the classic tale. Robin Hood is (and has always been) Maid Marian in disguise, and leads a motley group of Merry Men (few of whom are actually men) against the greedy Prince John. As the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, who will stand for the vulnerable if not Robin? What is the cost of revealing your true self in a time of trouble? Modern concerns and romantic entanglements clash on the battlefield and on the ramparts of Nottingham Castle in this play about selfishness, selflessness, love deferred and the fight. Always the fight. The fight must go on.
