In 1991, philanthropist Esther Honens established The Esther Honens International Piano Competition Foundation in her hometown of Calgary with a gift of $5 million. Her dream was to discover and launch the careers of the world’s most promising emerging pianists—a dream that has become a highly renowned international success story. arch for the Complete Artist” awards one of the world’s largest and most prestigious piano prizes. The annual Honens Festival is one of Canada’s premier classical music events, intended to share Esther Honens’ love of world renowned music with Albertans every year. The Honens Festival was named 2015 Festival of the Year at Tourism Calgary’s White Hat Awards, in recognition of Honens’ efforts to enrich our city’s community spirit and raise Calgary’s profile as a tourism destination on national and global scales.

On Monday 22 June, Honens and are teaming up for Sensory Friendly Day, complete with an adaptive concert hosted by Dr. Accordion.

Expect clapping games, live composing, and music from around the world in a relaxed environment.

The 2026 Honens Festival is almost here!

From 10-13 September enjoy four days of extraordinary music in Calgary brought to life by guest curator and 2003 Honens Laureate Winston Choi. This year's Festival features an incredible roster of artists including Honens Laureates Élisabeth Pion, Carter Johnson, and Nicolas Namoradze, Artistic Director Jon Kimura Parker, jazz pianist Chris Andrew, and violinist MingHuan Xu.

From 4:30 to 6:30 pm, 2022 and 2025 Honens Semifinalist Ádám Balogh will work with beginner and intermediate piano students, followed by Honens Artistic Director Jon Kimura Parker leading intermediate and advanced students from 7 to 9 pm.
