Pith is directed by Mark Lewandowski, here is what he thinks of the upcoming show!

1. What do you love about Pith?

It’s one of my favourite plays. I saw the first production of it at the Edmonton Fringe in 1997, and it immediately had a profound effect on me and how I would make theatre. It’s hilarious and moving.

2. What is one travel story you would share at a dinner party or gathering of friends?

My daughter and I do a great tag team story of our experience in the Frankfurt airport on a recent return from a visit to Poland. It’s way too involved to recount here. But ask us if you have about 20 minutes to hear our roller-coaster ride. It’ll have you in stiches.

3. What do you hope audiences take away from Pith?

Let’s just say I hope they enjoy the journey. I don’t want to say more than that.

Stephanie Alexandre plays Nancy in Pith. We asked her a few questions about the show...

1. What do you love about Pith?

I love how effortlessly Pith balances humor with grief, and shows how the two are not exclusive. There was a time when my family was walking through a prolonged season of loss, with multiple unexpected deaths amongst close friends and family members. There were many tears during this time, but something that surprised me was that there was also so much laughter. The grief had a way of knitting us together. I love how this is highlighted in Pith. Virginia has experienced immense and heartbreaking loss, and while there cannot be a replacement for it, she now has Nancy and Jack to sit with her through the ache. And in the face of it, they can share a laugh together. How beautifully human.

2. What is one travel story you would share at a dinner party or gathering of friends?

Last summer, for my dad's 60th birthday, we took a father-daughter trip to Japan. I made two discoveries on this trip. The first, is that I have severe traveller's FOMO (I must make sure we don't miss out on ANYTHING). The second is that my very kind father will never say no to me. Let me tell you-- I put that poor man through the ringer. We averaged 30-40 THOUSAND steps per day, and had the adventure of our lives. There are so many stories to share, like how we somehow had a perfectly-timed hike up Mount Fuji in between severe storms, or how we accidentally ended up in Osaka at the same time as World Expo without knowing it would be there, but the best part of it all was getting to share it with my dad. He's the best friend a gal could ask for.

3. What do you hope audiences take away from Pith?

I hope audiences are inspired to play! That is something I've been learning from Pith myself. Life can be heavy, but we are blessed with imagination and creativity and the ability to enjoy fun with the people around us. Play is a reminder to hope.

1. What do you love about Pith?

I love Virginia's steadfastness, I love Nancy's earnestness and I love Jack's spontaneity. I love discovering a whole rainforest in front of the chaise. I love the imagination and the adventure of it all.

2. What is one travel story you would share at a dinner party or gathering of friends?

I lived in India some time ago. My partner John (now husband) joined me in the last month of my stay there and we travelled around. We were staying at a retreat centre and hanging our laundry out on the roof to dry. I was looking over the railing when I saw a monkey making her way along the ledge. She was heading in John's direction. I called out to him to let him know there was a monkey nearby. He didn't hear me but looked over the ledge to see what I was pointing at. At the same time the monkey chose that moment to jump onto the railing. They ended up face to face and almost smacked heads. Both of them shrieked and leapt back with the same look of terror on their faces. The monkey stayed on the roof with us but didn't stop glaring at John the whole time we were up there.

3. What do you hope audiences take away from Pith?

I hope you come away feeling a little braver, a little more inclined to embrace the 'unknown', and to go on that adventure. I also hope you know you are not alone, that there are people who will face those river rapids with you.

Meet the cast of Pith!

We asked Ray Dalhousie, who plays Jack, a few questions about the show...

1. What do you love about Pith?

The script is tremendous and I had an immediate fondness for it as soon as I read it. Set in the 1920s we have a continent roving adventure that channels imagination and creativity in adults while working through one's grief. My first thought was, "You had me at 1920s!" And it's a rare gift in theatre getting the opportunity to play multiple characters with various accents!

2. What is one travel story you would share at a dinner party or gathering of friends?

Several years ago I was visiting the town I was born in, Langley. We were crossing into B.C. when quite abruptly we found ourselves driving through a forest fire! Bright reds and an intense heat loomed over and close to us. Embers drifted gently down and rested on our windshield. As alarming as it should have been, the razing was somehow also beautiful to watch.

3. What do you hope audiences take away from Pith?

Sincerely, I pray, if anything, that audiences will come away from Pith with encouragement to dust off that part of their mental faculties that controls imagination. Perhaps a healthy game of make-believe and pretend is in order. Imagination is not just for children and it definitely isn't forbidden to you once you pass the threshold of youth. Once you see this show, I implore you, give yourself permission to let your thoughts wander. . .
