It was such an honour to welcome members of the Tsuut’ina Nation to Workshop Studios for a handbuilding workshop, where we created smudge bowls together. 🌿✨ Sharing clay, stories, and creativity in our space reminds us of the power of art to connect communities and traditions. We look forward to more collaborations with Tsuut’ina Nation! 🦋

Huge thank you to our dear friends for facilitating the event and for these beautiful images.

We’re so excited to welcome Tory Mackay, our new Studio Manager, and Marcia Jeanes, our new Admin. These two bring a perfect mix of positive energy, creative insight, and a whole lot of heart to the studio.

Tory’s deep knowledge of studio practices and her passion for community building make her a natural fit for the Workshop vibe. You’ll see her keeping things running smoothly while always up for a chat or helping hand.

Marcia is our behind-the-scenes powerhouse, so kind, thoughtful, and incredibly organized. She brings an artist’s eye and an inclusive spirit to everything she touches.

Check out their bios below and say hi when you see them around, we’re so lucky to have them! 💛

✨ Tory ✨

Tory combines conceptual training with deep craft knowledge, holding a Philosophy degree from the University of Calgary and an intensive ceramic and fibre education from the Kootenay School of the Arts. Their practice explores body, queerness, and human-altered landscapes — through large-scale, atmospheric-fired vessels that blur sculpture and function.

A wheel-throwing and atmospheric kiln specialist, Tory spent a year in residency at Medalta, where they developed new surface and colour research in salt and wood kilns across a series of queered, body-based vessels.

“Before I found clay, I split my time between academic writing and the reforestation camps of northern BC. I used to dream of a path that could hold both of my passions together. My ceramic and firing practice has turned out to be exactly that. In each studio session I ask: how can I communicate in a way my writing could not?

✨ Marcia ✨

Hi! My name is Marcia and I’m a graduate of AUArts, with a degree in Ceramics. My creative path has taken me all over the place, from slow quilting, to dyeing fibre and spinning wool for my own sweaters, to bookbinding sketchbooks that I love filling with my next wild ideas. When I’m not making stuff, I can usually be found hanging out with my three kids and our standard poodle, Zelda.

We are so proud to be able to provide our students with gas reduction firings at Workshop. This fascinating process happens in our gas kiln, where we intentionally reduce the oxygen supply during firing. When the kiln is starved of oxygen, the flame seeks it out from other materials in the kiln, like the glaze or clay body, creating beautiful chemical reactions. ✨ This results in rich, earthy tones, unpredictable surface textures, and unique depth that simply can’t be achieved in an electric kiln. We’ve also loved seeing students expand their creativity with our wide selection of underglazes, adding even more vibrancy and personality to their work. 🌈 Whether you’re experimenting with textures, colors, or glazes, the possibilities are endless!
