The Calgary Folk Music Festival sends it's deepest condolences to Mike Little's family, including his beloved wife Candace, his bandmates, friends and community.

For decades Mike's backline company, KLM, was critical to the festival's staging and sound and was often seen performing, either with The Hello Darlins or lending his incredibly talented hands supporting others. His impact in our community was deep and knew no bounds.

We love you MFL. We'll miss you. Thank you.❤️

Dear loved ones,
If you are reading this, I have taken a soul flight to the other side. In other words, I have died.

I know this may come as a shock, because I have been managing my health with incredible support - and success. We won. We won more time on earth, we won more tours, more moments, more music. The most recent round of treatment was over 95% successful, however- things unfolded very suddenly and unexpectedly in the last days and I accept that this is my destiny and it was time to return to Spirit.

First and foremost, please know that I left this world surrounded by love and music.

Music, is a great love of my life. It is my church, my spiritual practice, and my connection to Source. Through music I found my life purpose, healing, friendship, community, and joy. It gave me the extraordinary privilege of teaching, performing, creating, and sharing life with so many wonderful people. For every note played, lesson taught, every stage, studio, and friendship made along the way, I am deeply grateful.

To my beloved beautiful wife Candace, thank you for sharing this dance with me. It is my greatest heartache to leave you behind. You are my soulmate and my truest companion in music and in life. You know me better than anyone ever could, and I am grateful beyond words for every moment we shared together. You are so magical and powerful- and I will always be by your side.

I am also incredibly proud of our family - our three beautiful daughters, my sisters, my bonus siblings, and the parents and bonus parents who have given me their unconditional love and support. The power of my family circle and my closest friends have brought laughter, love, meaning, peace and light into my life.

About the music-
Candace will continue to steward and share the music, lessons, videos and projects we have created together. I ask that you support her gently right now as she moves forward with light, love, and music- which is what I want for her.

I just released a new organ record and we even have an entire Hello Darlins album that is in the works. I’m so proud of the musical legacy that will continue beyond the fence line…

To my beautiful friends - fellow musicians, students, collaborators and everyone who crossed paths with me, thank you. It has been a great honour to create with you.

I believe we are all energy, and that energy does not disappear. So when you gather with bands, friends, sing a song, play an instrument, or lose yourself in the joy of creating, know that we are still connected.

I am deeply grateful for this life and for every person who shared a piece of it with me.

In the meantime, I officially boarded the flight to my biggest gig yet, and plan to arrive at a heavenly bandstand filled with incredible musicians and loved ones who have gone before me. I can’t wait for the reunion.

If I could leave you with a few things, they would be these words:

Gratitude. Courage.
Passion. Resilience. Practice. Forgiveness. Loyalty. Integrity.
Love fully.
Always create.
Keep learning.
Share your knowledge and talents freely.
Bet on yourself.
Be kind to others.
Be kind to animals.
Serve the song, and serve others… (but never be anyone’s bitch.)🤟🎹❤️

THANK YOU for this life, the music, the friendship, the laughter, and the love. I have had an incredible life and my life with Candace were the happiest and best of it.

I’ll see you in the skies - and meet you in the music. - Mike Little
❤️🙏❤️🎹

🌻 The Mbira Renaissance Band is coming to the Calgary Folk Music Festival this July 23 - 26, 2026 at Prince's Island Park!

The 1300-year-old mbira, or thumb piano – an ancient instrument of Zimbabwe origin – is at the heart of this enticing Albertan renaissance. Its sound, likely familiar to world music fans’ ears, is reborn through the band’s infectious polyrhythmic grooves, built from their diverse global roots. Leaders Chaka and Chiedza Zinyemba were born in Zimbabwe. Bassist James Stuart spent years travelling in Japan. Greek-decendant guitarist George Koufogiannakis and Tony Flanagan bring jazz chops. Original member of famed Zimbabwean band Mokoomba, Donald Moyo, tinkles the keys. Rumbi Zinyemba and Holly Sangster add vocals and saxophone. The Zinyemba’s colourful, passionate dancing completes their magical world.

Together their upbeat, joyful multi-culti creations weave rootsy Southern African influences, jazz, reggae and Afro-pop. The lyrics (sung predominantly in the local Shona language) tell stories of love, migration, African–Canadian connections and a deep appreciation of culture and tradition. It’s a life-affirming celebration of cross-cultural mash-ups through a modest, ancient instrument’s powerful history. Zimbabwean greats Thomas Mapfumo, the Bhundu Boys, Andy Brown and Chiwoniso Maraire who inspired them would be proud.

🌷Lacey Hill is coming to the Calgary Folk Music Festival at Prince's Island Park this July 23 - 26, 2026!

Six Nations–born Oneida/Mohawk singer‑songwriter Hill’s music blends soul, folk, blues and R&B into a sound she describes as Indigenous soul. Rooted in experience and guided by deep emotional honesty, her songs are reflective, warm, and spiritually resonant, carried by a powerful, expressive voice.

Hill paid her dues singing backup for local Six Nations bands, eventually evolving into writing her own songs centering connection, healing and storytelling, drawing listeners into an intimate and purposeful musical space. Hill is a multi-talented artist with fingers in a variety of pies – she played the lead in the NDNs on the Airwaves comedy web series in 2022, as a performer and contributor for the Truth and Illusion theatre project at Young Peoples Theatre that same year. She was also a keynote speaker on the topic of Honouring Your Bundle.

Hill offers a soulful experience driven by heartfelt vocals, rhythm-heavy arrangements and moments of quiet intensity that invite reflection as much as movement. LIve, she’s grounded and generous, creating a shared energy, connection and openness that leaves audiences feeling uplifted and deeply engaged.

It really is festival season! 🫡 Back in May we stopped in at East Town Get Down and enjoyed a deep dive into local culture and community on International Ave. We caught up with many sweet CFMF friends like Shaela Miller and Kacy Lee Anderson - and the fun continues this weekend!

If you head out to the tiny village of Milo, AB this June 12 - 14 you will find Lie Low Music Fest - we call this festival our little sister for a lot of reasons. There's happy faces, incredible music, reunited friends, camping, sing-songs around the fire, late night dancing and memories to last a lifetime. And they are in their 5th year, so we've seen this community grow into something really special that you should be a part of.

⭐️ And we are thrilled to be able to see Kacy again, but this time with Clayton as the aptly named Kacy and Clayton as the festival's headliners.

See you there!

🌼 is playing the Calgary Folk Music Festival this July 23 - 26, 2026 at Prince's Island Park!

She played her first song onstage at fabled Calgary venue The Ship & Anchor at age 11. The pre-teenaged Kate Stevens was not only breezing down the path of her own career – she was lifting other rising stars as a Music Mile youth ambassador, all before she was old enough to perform in bars. Barely in her twenties, she won YYC Music awards for solo artist and R&B artist of the year, later winning five more, and continued to champion Alberta artists on her former CKUA show Magnetic North, and now CKUA's The Upload.

She might seem like any other young woman playing an ordinary happy hour, until she opens her mouth and reveals songs of the universe, of ubiquitous heartbreak, heartmend, hopefulness and despair, bagging 50 years of living in a precise middle eight. Her voice was not made for jazz and soul – they were made for her voice, a voice sparkling like a jewel fallen from a pawned wedding ring, lying in a pebbled laneway, reflecting back the pageant of life in all its grit and glory.
