🚨 ARTIST HIGHLIGHT: The Blox Arts Centre is excited to feature Toxic Fem a Mohkínstsis (Calgary, Alberta) based feminist punk band blending punk, metal, blues, rock, and jazz into a sound entirely their own.

Formed in 2021, Toxic Fem combines thrashy guitars, powerful drums, melodic vocals, catchy lyrics, and genre-bending songwriting with a strong focus on community, audience connection, and creating space for marginalized voices within the punk scene. 🔥🤘

Released May 30, Night Witches was inspired by the all-female bomber regiment that earned the legendary nickname “Night Witches.” Fueled by thrashy guitars, anthemic vocals, and powerful drums, the track combines history, storytelling, and unapologetic heavy music.

The song also inspired the title of the band’s larger project, Say My Name so I’ll Never Die, which explores historical and fictional stories of womanhood through new perspectives, shifting tones, themes, and genres throughout.

Toxic Fem is about community, representation, storytelling, and challenging labels. Their music brings together punk attitude, experimentation, socially conscious themes, and high-energy audience engagement to carve out a space in Calgary’s scene that is distinctly their own.🤘

✨ ARTIST HIGHLIGHT: TISSA RAHIM

📸 daman?

The Blox Arts Centre is proud to highlight Tissa Rahim, the Persian Powerhouse bringing R&B/Soul together with a contemporary Middle Eastern flair.

A 2023 YYC Music Award winner with a 40-city tour under her belt, Tissa has built a distinctive sound that blends soulful R&B with her Persian roots.

Her latest single, “Rush,” was released this June, with a new collection of music and accompanying music videos coming throughout the rest of the year with support from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

🔥 Catch Tissa performing TODAY at Community Fest at The BLOX Business Improvement Area , where she’ll be sharing new music alongside dancers.

She’ll also be performing at ContainR in Inglewood on August 30.✨

🚨 ARTIST HIGHLIGHT 🚨

The Blox Arts Centre is proud to feature Black Pontiac. Born out of tension and shaped by Vancouver’s DIY underground, Black Pontiac is a quartet balancing grit, glam, garage-rock edge, and indie-pop hooks into an energetic live show that has earned them a cult following across North America.

What makes Black Pontiac stand out is their independence. With no label support for the past several years, they’ve produced, released, and promoted their own music, made and shipped their own merch, and even helped book their own tours.

Black Pontiac is an independent Vancouver, BC quartet whose sound thrives in a push and pull of chaos and control. Drawing inspiration from acts like Cage the Elephant and The Clash, their music blends alternative rock, garage-rock edge, and indie-pop hooks into something reckless, swaggering, and full of feeling.

Their latest release, A Danger to Himself and Others, is their second full-length LP and captures the contradictions that define the band. It’s anxious yet tender, chaotic yet deeply human. The record dives into themes of danger, fear, falling apart, and the search for joy and belonging in the mess.

Emerging from a reshaped post-pandemic DIY community, the band has continued to build their name on their own terms. With over 10 million Spotify streams, multiple tours, festival appearances, and support slots for artists like lovelytheband and Peach Pit, Black Pontiac has created serious momentum while remaining proudly independent.

The Blox Arts Centre is proud to feature SHY FRiEND, Calgary’s alternative darlings serving unabashedly chaotic concerts and an unrivalled live experience for the girls, g**s, cringe & fringe.

Blending alternative rock, punk energy, theatrical performance and their own brand of fruity scum-pop, SHY FRiEND creates accessible, inclusive and high-energy music that turns every venue into a punk-forward DIY church.

Following the release of their six-song EP SNAGGLETOOTH, SHY FRiEND has continued building a reputation as one of Calgary’s most exciting and unpredictable live acts.

Their shows are designed as welcoming parties where people are encouraged to be loud, strange, expressive and completely themselves.

Their mantra, “TO BE CRINGE IS TO BE FREE,” sits at the heart of everything they do.

That commitment goes beyond the music. SHY FRiEND provides free earplugs at every show and livestreams as many performances as possible on Twitch, helping make their concerts more accessible to people both inside and outside the venue.

Their recent highlights include nominations for Alternative Recording of the Year and Performer of the Year at the 2025 YYC Music Awards, a nomination for Best Music Video at the 2023 STINGER Awards for “lazy bones,” and a sold-out SNAGGLETOOTH release show at Loophole featuring drag, pizza and a femme DJ dance party.

They also performed on the 2026 Calgary Stampede Coca-Cola Stage with a nine-piece horn section and four incredible local drag performers, had a documentary made about the SHY FRiEND project by SAIT students that premiered to a sold-out theatre, and even received a rave review from bbno$ for “NEVER BEEN A SINNER.”

This August SHY FRiEND will head out on their first British Columbia and Alberta tour.

We had two incredible DJ’s for the VOCA VOCA Night Fever Event maybel & S4KURA Both DJ’s had everyone dancing and smiling! Moonlight☆Opera delivered some beautiful theatrics and exceptional dance moves! VOCA VOCA 2 was a success at The Blox Arts Centre✨
