Words float and evaporate
Too sweet, yet too bitter—
Bitter, because they shouldn’t be spoken
Bitter, because they cannot be known

I keep my silence at the door
A weight held behind the eyes
Arms pinned to my sides

Butterfly flits by—
you disappear
Leaving my heart unattended

I wish you could see those floating mists

No—please, don’t

I still can’t quite believe Akemi's Song is a finalist for the Richard Allen Chase Memorial Award by the Canadian Children's Book Centre! My heart is just so full of gratitude. ❤️

A huge thank you to Plumleaf Press Publisher & Plumleaf Press for believing in me to illustrate this beautiful, poetic story written by Joanne Kwok. And to Rebecca Bender—thank you from the bottom of my heart for guiding me through and pushing me to create illustrations I didn't believe I was capable of. THANK YOU!!!

To all the readers, both little and big, who have loved Akemi's story—thank you for opening your hearts to it.

Last but not least, thank you Canopy Studios | Art + Wellness and cSPACE Marda Loop for the opportunity to showcase the original artworks and to promote Akemi's Song to the local community! Thank you 🌷🌷🌷

What an honour! Thank you CCBC!!

Such a lovely evening! I ✨ It’s always so special meeting people from all over the world, we come together to chat and create together. Even with a quieter crowd yesterday, I thoroughly enjoyed the conversations! Hope you all did too!

See you next month! ✨

Behind the piece...

"Longing, fear, uncertainty, pleading... almost like asking for permission."

When I created this piece, those were the exact words looping in my head. Slipping into doubt isn't a dead end, it's a heavy, necessary part of the journey we have to carry ourselves through.

✍🏻
I do and I don't
I can and I can't
I should not
I shall not
Leave a breath between us
Yet please be right here

I am not my own
This, I know
Let my body float
Empty my hands, empty my mind
Lest I dare to map the stars
Lest I long for the unbearable moonlight

It’s a mix of feelings saying goodbye to this original painting of Akemi's Song. I'm sad to let it go, yet excited knowing it will be housed in a little girl's room. I am so thrilled to know that she got a chance to read Akemi's Song at cSPACE Marda Loop during my exhibit there and loved Akemi so much. Now she gets to keep one of the originals AND a copy of the book! I am absolutely over the moon!

I just LOVE creating and working with children—they are just full of surprises, imagination, and creativity! It means so much knowing that they actually LOVE what is created for them!

Joanne Kwok thank you for the lovely and inspiring story 🩷

Sky turns to shadow
I yearn for the light
The stars are kind
but they are too small for these raging nights

Winds howl their rants
Oceans shake violently
The very lands are burning
I run, I run, I break away
I scream into the void for help
Help!
Someone, help!
Yes, the stars are kind
But they are helpless against such furious darkness

HELP! Help! help...
I RUN, I run, I limp, I drop
I cannot force one more step
And then, amidst the ash—a bird warbling lightly, gently

"If I stand, will you stand?
If I walk out to the sea, will you come with me?"

I pause
I search around for the singing bird
The moment our gazes meet
its soothing melody floods my weary soul

What if I am air
What if I am a breath of wind
What if I am nothing but a single leaf
clinging to the vine
Where I can breathe
Where one is stripped bare
and wounds are healed

The storms rage on
The fires keep burning
But now I can hear the stars singing along
—lightly and gently
I can hear the leaves growing and swaying
—strongly and fiercely

Would you want to come along?

Beyond & Within passed by in the blink of an eye. This project means a lot to me; whether or not the story came from imagination, somewhere, somehow there is a piece of me in it.

"Take a piece of me; leave a piece of you" — a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who left me a piece of themselves. I took some time to read through each letter and every single word — they are BEAUTIFUL!!! I am so touched by your words, your encouragement, your poems, images, and stories! Thank you!!! I am so glad that Beyond & Within resonated with you and sparked a little emotion, creativity, or memory. That's exactly what I wanted this art experience to do — spark a little connection.

Thank you to cSPACE for this opportunity and the flexibility that allowed this art installation to happen. Thank you to everyone who came!

Creating Beyond & Within not only gave me the joy of sharing my art, it also helped me understand myself more. One of the things I learned about myself — confirming it once again — is HOW MUCH I LOVE TO MAKE ART THAT SPEAKS AUTHENTICALLY (no matter how scary it is), CREATE MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE AND TO MAKE CONNECTIONS!

Last but not least, and I cannot say this enough, HUGE THANK YOU to my sweetest friend Kim Yim who helped me record the paino pieces and also performed at the opening. The music brought Beyond & Within experience to the next level, it plays one of the very important roles for the experience. THANK YOU for doing this for me and thank you again for walking this journey with me!!! 🩷🩷🩷
